AUX-in on BMW (stereo?)

I know its not a corrado. But I tried to play the music off my phone through my dad's car speakers in the AUX in. Its a sony ericsson mobile doesnt have audio jack but a adapter which I plugged the 3.5 jack into then the car. Its only played through the right speakers so Im thinking something in the setup isnt stereo or is the cable Im using knackered?
