What's up with my engine? Head gasket?

Recommended Posts

Peeps,

I wonder if you could help. As much as I admire the massive lump I have in the engine bay, I don't know much about it...

Is this my headgasket telling me it's time to call quits? This little black rubbery half a moon thing is constantly weeping

black substance that doesn't smell.

The reason why I am bringing this up, is because I've had the odd whiff of petrol while driving for a couple of days now.

I managed to locate the fuel rail and checked the pipes going in and coming out of it. The pipes seem fine and the

clips/retainers are tight. Also, the smell of petrol seems to be coming from further back.

Anyways, any thoughts to calm my beating heart?

Cheers,

Rica

Rest your palputating heart.....that is indeed just a seeping half moon. V common! That is a tiny leak, looks worse than it is! I've seen VRs that are completely wet from top to bottom with oil!

Have a snout further round the corner of the head to check for other leaks that may have crept round to the front by capillary action.

Further down......could be a bit of oil flicked up from the pulleys or it's a seeping HG. Another common thing on VRs to have a little sweat of oil like that. It's not worth lifting the head for that. I'd wait until it goes completely or save it until the chains need doing. Try washing it away with gunk and keep an eye out for it returning.

The half moon is easy enough. Just need to remove the manifolds and rocker cover, replace all the seals and gaskets and refit.

As for the petrol whiffs.....check you carbon canister hoses and the blue frequency valve under the MAF sensor....or should that be MAD sensor?
