Newb alert - some questions Id love answered :o) pretty pls!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys/girls?

Ive been reading up on this forum quite a bit and sarching etc. I just have some general queries Id love answered.

Im looking for a G60 corrado (im in the UK).

1: Ive heard that the Corrado gearbox is "awful". What are people referring to? I gather that either or maybe both first and second are too short? Do people that bash the gearboxs have a point or not? Is it just that because of the ratios it gives them a "bad" 0-60 time? Im more interested in quarter, but can someone confirm, does it hit 60 in second? What other boxes can you use with corrado G60s if I ever wanted to change it for better ratios?

2: At what sort of power with a g60 should one be looking to uprate say the clutch and any other parts? Im looking for atleast 200bhp hopefully and wondering if I need to budget for a vr6 clutch or something?

Also, I gather one needs to uprate injectors or the FPR as well at some stages?

I hear of people talking a lot about ISV's...what does this stand for/mean...is it related to the above injectors and FPR etc?

3: How spacious are corrados in the back. I never checked stupidly. I would need rear seats for passengers occasionally. Also...how are the taller guys here finding their Corrados in that its a coupe (often I find being tall in coupe's the roof is lower and touching my head/hair dont laugh!)

4: IF I buy a cheap chea Corrado a bit shoddy engine wise, so long as I get the charger rebuilt, how well do the actual engine hold out after say 120,ooo miles?

5: Do 17's upset the way the car drives? Would I be better with 16s? Am going to lower anyway.

6: I have visited pitstop developments website and cant find anywhere where it says costs of porting the charger. I can only find kits and pulleys etc. How much am I looking at to get charger fully ported top spec with the RSR outlet thing and a 68mm pulley. Also how much is the relevant chip for this upgrade? How much extra for cam and a nice front mount intercooler?

7: Anyone have any stats for g60 when modded at various stages? I read it does 0-60 at 8.9 as standard...surely faster? What kind of time for stage 4 charger and minor mods roughly? into the 6secs?

8: When people say, yeah you should get a cross flow head. how much are these? Where can you get them from? Are they only 2ltr or 1.8 too?

9: What other things should I budget for when modding to 200bhp plus..i hear of these catch tank things and oil coolers etc? Various things I dont understand.

10. FINALLY! How much cheaper are things over in the states at say bahnbrenner etc. I have a friend in the staes who comes here often see  What would be worth bringin across? Would I save much? i.e. charger full porting and upgrades etc...cross flow head?

CONGRATS ON WHAT LOOKS LIKE A GREAT SITE. Any advice welcome. Cant wait to get my dream car soon...a corrado G60!

PS: Hate being a newb and wanting to understand it all. Im prepared for learing curve though! Cheers

Welcome to the forum.... 8)

1) The gearbox on a G60 is very strong, but, in some peoples (mine included!) 2nd gear is too short (about 54mph max IIRC)... This results in a worse 0-60 time than you'd expect from the spec of the car, and I found it annoying in the kind of driving I was doing. I'm now having my box rebuilt with a longer VR6 2nd gear, good for almost 70mph.. 8)

2) Common consensus says that the G60 clutch is good for around 250Bhp with no problems... The VR6 clutch is actually slightly cheaper and should take the power slightly better... If you need to change a clutch, fit a VR6 one, otherwise, you should be fine.... 8) ISV = Idle Stabilisation Valve... uprated injectors and FPR are required with a chip and pulley conversion to ensure you don't run the engine lean and blow it up! :|

3)Drivers and passenger front seats are height adjustable... I'm 6'1 (with relatively short legs!) and I fit with a couple of inches above my spikey hair! ;) I can sit in the back of my G60 comfortably on the passenger side, although if I was driving the car, I couldn't fit behind the drivers seat (if you see what I mean!) 'cos of my driving position... Long journeys in the back of a corrado will be a bit cramp inducing, but you can fit 4 adults in one with no problems...

4) My G60 had 250K miles on it before I rebuilt the engine... 120,000 is nothing to a looked after G60 engine. The 8V block is very strong and lasts well when looked after... if neglected they can break though, like any complex mechanical thing... You'd do better to buy one that's been looked after than one that's had the engine neglected as you'll never know what else has been neglected as well as the engine!

5) I've not tried 17's on my car, but I can confirm that 16's are almost no different in ride quality to the standard 15's... Most people say that 17's DO affect the feel of the ride and that it's a compromise between rde quality and looks that should dictate what wheels you fit... 16's are said to be the best compromise... 8)

6 ) send Darren ( G-Man ) a PM and ask him, he's in the same workshop as Pitstop and does a wonderful job on the chargers. Click on the PM button on the bottom of his post above...

7) dunno, sorry...

8) see 6! ;)

9) probably also seeing 8 and 6! ;)

10) yeah, with the exchage rate as it is at the moment, you may be able to source some parts cheaper, however you may have problems with support and warantees if you get stuff like a charger from the states... :?

Hi Becky, welcome to the forum. 8)

If you're tuning your engine in stages then the 1st engine mod to do is to get the 'charger sorted. 2nd thing to do is to fit a large front mounted intercooler. My suggestion would be to fit larger injectors, 3.5bar fuel pressure regulator, 68mm pulley, induction kit & SNS re-chip. If you're lowering the car then lower it before buying your new wheels - otherwise you may end up with the wrong wheels (like I did).

Some people worry too much about uprating brakes etc. My own opinion is that although the car will have more power, it will not be able to trave much (if any) faster nor will it be any heavier. I would leave the brakes alone - only thing I've done is to fit drilled front discs & they make no noticable difference whatsoever.

Wow thankyou everyone for responses! came back and already lots! So any more ideas as regards query 6 7 8 9 and 10?

lol

Thatnks ever so for responses so far! Cleared a few things up already. I hear that some people just replace JUSt the 1st and 2nd gears with VR6 ones...how mucgh work/cost is involved here?

Also Im confused...what is the difference between G werks and Pitstop developments?

Regards!

Changing the G60's first and second for a VR's ain't cheap/easy... I'm having it done while I have an LSD fitted and a gearbox rebuild... My G60's done 250,000 miles and I've just built a new 1940cc engine for it which I didn't want to subject the old gearbox to the power of without getting it rebuilt!

To put a figure on it, I think that my gearbox rebuild is gonna come in at just over £1500 all in... :?

£1500 for a gearbox rebuild!? I dont have that kind of money! Even if it is with an LSD. Hmm...how much does the gearing affect the quarter mile times? Surely not that much? Anyone got any performance figures for say a G60 with chip, pulley, cahrger porting, and cam and maybe front mount IC. This is what im looking to get done really all for as cheap as poss.

Thaks guys

Yeah, I've kinda gone a bit overboard with my rebuild project...

If you can get hold of the bits that you need (input shaft with 1st and second on it, and 1st, 2nd and reverse gears) you'll probably be able to get it done much cheaper than that at a local place... I took my gearbox to stealth as I wanted an LSD fitting and everything re-doing to make sure that it'll take the power from my new engine without leaving me stranded somewhere, hence the cost... 8)

Getting hold of the gears isn't that easy though, I eventually had to buy a good complete VR gearbox just to get the gears... that bumped the cost up a bit too...

Maybe Darren (g-man) would be best answering this but basically g-werks specialise in 'charger rebulds etc & Pitstop do the rest of the mechanical work. They share adjoining premises. They also do SNS re-chips too. :D

better is that g-werks specialise in G60's and pitstop in G40's

both do charger rebuilds and are collaberating on all projects

steve at pitstop did my charger

So where can I get a cross flow head from guys? How much am I looking at for that? Also where and how much for a nice front mount intercooler? Can I use one from a golf rallye? Is a crossflow head worth the extra hassle and expense since I wouldnt be able to afford a LSD I dont think.

How much can a Corrado G60 cope with before traction becomes an issue?

Thanks guys been very helpful so far

Hi Becky

Best thing to do is take the tuning in steps. Dont worry about the g/box ratios yet, that can be done at a later stage if needed.

First step is to get the charger rebuilt and flowed.

Make sure the car is running well and replace the knock sensor, lambda sensor temp sensor if needed.

Check you have the correct spark plugs - Bosch W6DPO (Platinums)

Then go for the 68mm pulley and chip - preferably an SNS No Lag chip :)

This step will also require a 3.5bar FPR and a smaller belt for the pulley.

Enjoy the car while you think of the next step which could be smaller pulley - requiring bigger injectors, Front mounted intercooler, cam, etc etc.

Basically dont go mad all at once, its better to take the tuning in steps so you can iron out any problems as you go. It will also give you an appreciation for the gains you make at each step.

I understand this, but surely its less costly to do as much as possible in one go in terms of labour? Any idea with the cross flow head and the front mount intercooler? Also, i still cant find on this forum anywhere, the kind of 0-60 and quarter stats modded corrado g60's are getting. Does the gearing affect quarter mile time that much? Im not that bothered by 0-60 if thats all that the ratios are "mucking up".

:o)

Thanks for you help

hello there darren here. bit wrong there steve.. basically speaking i do g60 stuff only which includes every aspect, liam does as little as possible. and steve takes care of psd work.. liam has now moved into our 2ND workshop and is just concentrating on the engine rebuilds g40/g60 and that leave far more room for steve and myself to work on customers cars whatever the work needed. you can also order a whole host of parts mail order from either site! (mine isnt quite finished yet though) we can now cater for everything from oil changes to complete engine rebuilds/conversions... as long as it has a super charger attached we will work on it... hope this clears things up.
