ReggiePerrin 0 Posted March 2, 2004 just been quoted 220 quid for new rear axle bushes on VR6. does this seem reasonable? i'm very far from being an expert on these things (ie pretty clueless really) but that does seem a bit steep, although i understand the work that needs to be done to fit them is pretty time consuming. stevemac 0 Posted March 2, 2004 For the work involved, £220 is about the going rate. Will be much cheaper if you have the knowlege & expertise to remove/refit the rear axle yourself.
ReggiePerrin 0 Posted March 2, 2004 thanks for your reply steve. wish i could do it myself but wouldn't know where to start mate! Cheers
kvwloon 0 Posted March 2, 2004 Thread hijack alert!...sorry, but, how do you know when they need replacing Is it just something an MOT would pick up on, or would you notice anything adverse yourself?
stevemac 0 Posted March 2, 2004 Thread hijack alert!...sorry, but, how do you know when they need replacing Is it just something an MOT would pick up on, or would you notice anything adverse yourself? MOT should pick up on them if they're worn - not always. My G60 had an MOT last month & passed with knackered bushes !! I know mine are very worn because I've already looked at them & they are definitely fcuked. Along with my very slightly bent rear axle.
corradovr6sc 0 Posted March 2, 2004 How much are the rear axle bushes from vw? Is it just two bushes at the back?

Yeah, some MOT places will let them thru because if they fail them you might ask them to do the work!! Maybe easier to get a new axle fitted steve - maybe from a passat??? Think the bushes are about £10 each from VAG
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 2, 2004 Thread hijack alert!...sorry, but, how do you know when they need replacing Is it just something an MOT would pick up on, or would you notice anything adverse yourself? You can feel it and hear it (knocking over bumps) mate. The rear end doesn't follow the front crisply through the bends, you'll notice an abscence of passive rear steer (very noticable on healthy bushes) and the car will be felt to rock from side to side over bumps, which is very unpleasant! Mine are getting done on March 13th, so I'll let you know the costs & part numbers etc. You also need to budget for a new brake proportioning valve as the unions often sieze into it. You don't always need one.....but add £100 to the budget....just in case. MOT testers don't always spot duff ones because they're buried in the axle and all you can see is the outer edges, which always crack anyway. It's not so much the cracking that is the give-away, but the softening of the rubber over time, which unless you know VWs like the back of your hand, you wouldn't notice. Chris VR6nos 0 Posted March 3, 2004 New axle!!! It's just not that bad to do! 2 metalastic bushes, they come out easily with the bush puller and an air gun & go in just the same, no effort other than pulling the trigger. Changing the whole axle is the same effort as doing the bushes, put the effort in and use WD40, get a couple of entheusiastic mates round to help 'cos it's heavy to shove around when under the car, a pack of Fosters and a radio & off you go, money saved & know more about your baby. The tool can be hired or bought from Halfords for £20 or there abouts, don't need an air gun, just wind them out with a ratchet, takes a bit longer but easy enough. It might be a bit of a chew but worth saving the £200 labour bill for a couple of hours toil. If yours is straight & the bearings don't rumble etc, just change yours unless you like playing in scrap yards, what if you have to take it off the Passat aswell ! ! ! Then the extra cost! Just my suggestion, best of luck! I've just bought the Powerflex bush kit for all the car so i'm having to do the same job, it's fun, that's how you learn. stevemac 0 Posted March 3, 2004 New axle!!! Well, not quite a new axle - I've located another G60 one, not quite so bent as mine. Gonna shotblast & recoat it here at work. After having removed the old bushes first :silly: I hear that the old bushes can be a b*****d to remove but if I hit any problems we have a gas-axe here that I can use. 8) Or will I need a "special tool" ? Henny 0 Posted March 3, 2004 nah, a gas axe will deffo shift it... ;) Try the good old BIG hammer first to remove it, and then resort to the gas-axe... 8)
stevemac 0 Posted March 3, 2004 ReggiePerrin - genuine VW G60 bushes retail at approx £37 + VAT each. Not sure on cost of VR ones though.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 3, 2004 I usually cut the old rubber out, hacksaw through the remaining metal sleeve and then cold chisel it out! Go round the axle with emery cloth till it shines, then tap the new bush in. Conslt the Bentley for the precise bush angle and drifting amounts because if the bushes don't go in properly, the rear end will sit on the piss.
