Anyone @Top Gear on Wednesday?

Recommended Posts

Seeing as this seems to be the Top Gear thread... I emailed them yesterday suggesting a follow up to Hammond's "How to spot a future classic". A sort of "where are they now" for the Corrado and the 190E 2.5 Cosworth.

Yesterday afternoon on Dave they had a Top Gear from 2003/4 when they were trying to prove whether progress had sped things up. They have a Mk1 Golf GTI against a Mk4 /5 GTI, Escort Cosworth against a Focus RS and a couple of others (Pug 206 v 205). The MK1 Golf was way faster which was nice to see.

/\ Yeah the standing start against the Jag was incredible. The only thing that comes close to such a ruthlessly efficient and savage launch like that is a drag car....

Yeah that start was astonishing, i didnt think they'd be able to improve ont he GT-R but they have tried. Seems to have worked too.

Sure Kev, no coincidence that the eye candy is within camera shot the rest of the ugly mugs, who are prob more into their cars (see how i gernalised it there haha), are all at the back!!

I had never really wanted the R35 but the MY12 R35 shown yesterday was really nice.

How does it manage it lap TG track (and ‘ring etc) so fast? Sure it has (minimum of) 520+bhp and all the computer wizardries but it’s a still very heavy car (1740+kg).

I still prefer GT3 RS cos it’s analogue at its finest!

As you saw with the Jag floundering in it's own tyre smoke, the GTR gains a good 5 seconds head start just from the launch, which on a small track like TG's is a great advantage :D

The difference with the GTR is the gearbox. It's strong enough to deploy all 500 odd torques off the line and the gearbox / engine software work together to provide a totally flat torque curve during shifts. Whereas other car's automated manual box software has to reduce engine torque during shifts (to reduce shock loading on the gears), the Nissan can give everything it's got from zero to flat out in one seamless, relentless shove.

And the handling and traction are just incredible, which comes from trick diffs and clever dampers / software.

Add those two together and it annihilates cars costing considerably more. As the mop haired one said, Nissan set out to do that from the get go and at £69K, it's incredibly good value.

I still prefer GT3 RS cos it’s analogue at its finest!

The new 4 litre Swansong special looks to be amazing when it comes out!
