Heater box help

Right ive spent the afternoon trying to fix my heater issues. Replaced the controls but still getting little or no air to the demister vents.

Took some time to understand how the mechanisms work and i think i get it.

The middle cabe (that goes into what i imagine is the heater box) doesn't seem to move very much. I can hear a flap trying to move/turn but its stuck. I assume its a flap that directs the air and is broken? That particular cable literally moves a couple of millimetres and then is stuck.

 

Anyway what i want to know is can the heater box be removed without taking the dash out and if so how? My drivers and passengers footwell plastics are out but cant see how to get more access to investigate.

 

And on a side note, anyway got a pic of how the 3 cable sit on the heater controls? Should have checked before taking it apart :-(

Yes it can, but it's fiddly! You'll need to disconnect the two matrix hoses that go through the bulkhead. There are also two bolts you'll need to undo on the bulkhead (engine side) level with the heater box. They are in line with each other. There is another one like this down near the ABS pump on the right side of the bulkhead (engine side) as you look at it. So, 3 in all. Also worth taking out the centre console. It's pretty self explanatory, just awkward! Good luck :)

Couple of questions (im not Mr DIY so need things explained simple :-)

 

1) Does this flap break or just jump out of position? Should i be looking at getting another heater box? In which case im not going to bother attempting to remove just yet.

2) I had a quick look in the engine bay but have no idea which bolts or even matrix hoses you mentioned. Will load some pics maybe you can point out which ones they are.

3) When you say remove the centre console do you mean the heater controls and stereo or the whole section? It all looks like part of the dash.

There is a thread about replacing the heater matrix. Do a search for it and have a read at that. There are lot of pictres in that thread which will give you some idea of what needs to be done.

Yep, by centre console, I mean the plastic part that houses the central heater vents, stereo, heater controls. Just be careful not to tighten the srews too much when refitting- the plastic is quite brittle and cracks easily ;)
