Bobby 0 Posted March 9, 2004 after rebuliding the head on my 1.8 16v i put the head back on timed up the the new belt and tried to turn the engine over by the lower pulley but it wasn't having none of if it :( ! so i took the timing belt back off and checked to see what was wrong, after turning the lower crank pulley i was definite it was something up the top end causing the problems. so after setting the piston in the centre positions i tried to move the flywheel to turn the cams over but it doesn't want to moveeither way back or fowards? any ideas i don't really want to have to start stripping the head off again, so i'm thinking that the cams need to be released and put back in agian, although the timing mark in spot on. all this hassle is making me think this car is more troublre than its worth!! thanks Bobby :D
PhatVR6 0 Posted March 9, 2004 Well, you should have set the head timgin up roughly, and the block should have been timed up at TDC on #1 BEFORE you fitted the head.... Remove all the cam bearing caps in the correct order, remove both cams, time up the crank and turn the cams to the correct position then refit them in the head with the caps. note the tightening sequence and torque. Bobby 0 Posted March 9, 2004 ok thanks, i will go investigate, i think i set it so the centre pistons were at tdc!! head was timed up before i put it on though. the lower crank pulley tdc mark is a joke, its so small. :x

Bobby 0 Posted March 9, 2004 used it but being a smart git i did a cross shape so when ive come to putting the pulley back on things went downhill, as the pulley lines up to the marks in four different positions  , don't know what i was thinking when i marked it up (it was 11.30pm though) . any ideas on how to line up the pulley now , is it just set the tdc mark in the gearbox and then set the pulley with the mark lined to the arrow on the timing belt cover? thanks Bobby
h100vw 0 Posted March 11, 2004 If you put any of the cam bearing caps on back to front, that'll make it a 8itch to turnover. Very important not to get any of them mixed up. Timing it up should be no problem. Personally, I'd use the mark at the crank pulley end. Someone may have put the flywheel back on wrong. There is only one mark on it and with a good torch it is easy to see, even without tippex (IMHO) Don't forget that when turning it over, you will come up against compression on each cylinder as it rotates. PhatVR6 0 Posted March 11, 2004 Time the crank up using the clutch/flywheel marks and the pointer on the gearbox, the pulley isn't accurate enough.
andycowuk 0 Posted March 11, 2004 Time the crank up using the clutch/flywheel marks and the pointer on the gearbox, the pulley isn't accurate enough But you can use the crank pulley to find out roughly wich mark on the flywheel is correct.
