Critical_Mass 10 Posted August 17, 2011 Hi all, Looking at buying a second hand VR downpipe to replace the one i have on the car, as i suspect there's a slight blow due to popping and highish pitch sucking noise. But before i get the secondhand downpipe fitted, i want to get it checked for no leaks. Does anyone know of any places in pref in Leeds or in Yorkshire area that can do this for me? Cheers Gaz
Critical_Mass 10 Posted August 18, 2011 Can anyone tell me whether i can get this done, or am i on a wild goose chase?
dannyboy 0 Posted August 19, 2011 gaz ive never really heard of a exhaust pressure tester outside R+D purposes but ill prob shot down in a minute. You could prob make one up using air pressure line with cap on either end,one with a connector on and some washing-up liquid in water to test for leaks. Not really sience, but it will show leaks.obviously with the downpipe off the car
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 4, 2011 Well searching the next ive not really found anything, so maybe they dont exist. But i would have though someone would be able to test for cracks in an exhaust part. Maybe a bit of DIY may have to be the way forward.
davidwort 0 Posted September 4, 2011 Cold system, start car and hand over tailpipe? With car on a ramp you can usually hear the leak instantly.
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 4, 2011 Well this is it, the downpipe isnt on the car yet. The one thats on the car i suspect has a slight leaking as there's popping going on, so got another one cheap, but dont want to fit it before getting it tested. Im assumed the one ive bought has no cracks, but i dont want to go to the hassle of fitting it to find it has, as the job to remove and replace is a PITA. steveo29 0 Posted September 5, 2011 never heard of such a thing , youd need to pay a workshop to make up custom plates/bungs to seal each end then roar an airline into it or make something up yourself with a tyre valve and pump it up
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 5, 2011 It must have been something i imagined. I'll look into getting something made up.
boost monkey 0 Posted September 5, 2011 You could take it to somewhere that does "Dye penetrant inspection". That basically involves looking for cracks by covering the part in a UV reflective fluid and shining flourescent light on it. Might work. I know my company get it done for a bunch of the castings they have, just for piece of mind against weakness/fatigue.
CorradoVR6-Turbo 0 Posted September 5, 2011 surly you would see a crack in the castings before you fit it?
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 5, 2011 well ill take a look before it would be fitted. But where the flexi pipes meet has is covered with metal.
CorradoVR6-Turbo 0 Posted September 5, 2011 ah right soz thought you were on about the manifolds,i would say if it visually looks good it probably will be good as in no soot around joint and the weaving around the flexi joints are intact?
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 5, 2011 Yeah the downpipe. I suppose it could be something to just take a risk on. Is the OEM downpipe pretty free flowing?
CorradoVR6-Turbo 0 Posted September 5, 2011 yea there is nothing in there, good size bore, generally they don't often go wrong.
