Crabapple 10 Posted August 22, 2011 I have a 1994 2.0 litre 16V Blackberry Corrado. I bought him (yes him!) 4 years ago and I've long since lost count of the £'s I've spent but I haven't (quite) stopped smiling yet... I'm not very technical (but I'm a girl so hopefully excused a few stupid questions) ;) I definitely know more now though than when I started. I've reached a bit of a milestone, hence joing the forum, I think my head gasket is potentially knackered but won't know until Wednesday... With any luck some of you guys n girls will help me to decide whether to repair the existing engine or swap it for a VR6, if the time comes. The body work is really good and I've tackled and solved a lot of common problems for a car of this age. All of which makes me very determined not to give up just yet!! And besides I can't think of anything else I would rather be driving.... ..Except maybe a TVR
carrots 1 Posted August 22, 2011 hi welcome,i had a problem with my 1.8 16v .it turned out to be an expensive job as the head was cracked so i had to get a 2nd hand head and have it recon
Jim 2 Posted August 22, 2011 Welcome :) Got any more info on the car (e.g. registration plate!)? I sold a blackberry 2.0 16v some years back in the Birmingham area quite a few years back and have never heard / seen a peep of it since!
Crabapple 10 Posted August 22, 2011 Hi Jim, as requested - L683FBV I bought it from a guy in Birmingham but it came from Listers in Worcester originally. Don't 'spose it's the same one? I've always wondered who owned it before me. Hi Carrots, yeah I'm dreading the price tag for this latest issue, hopefully I haven't caused any major issues but I've had cooling problems for a while so who knows what damage has been done... Just replaced the water pump and stat and thought it was all good again. Whilst doing all that noticed that the fan was only kicking in at the higher temp so changed the sensor. Fan kicks in around 90 now but can't get the coolant level to settle down. Plus I've got exhaust noises, loss of power and poor idle hence the head gasket worry. The oil and cap looks fine though so I'm trying to stay positive. Compression test on Wednesday....
Swompy 0 Posted August 22, 2011 Welcome :D Just a bit of advise about the car, dont build something you can buy as its not worth the money. There isnt much point putting a VR6 engine in a 16v or G60 due to the amount of work and cost of the whole process. The only exception to this would be to put a VR6 into a yellow 16v or G60 as the VR6 never came in that colour. If you want to put a different engine in try doing something out of the ordinary or go for the usual 1.8t conversion. At the end of the day its your choice but just something for you to think about :)
Jim 2 Posted August 22, 2011 Alas no - mine was L539 GVH. Nevermind :( Not sure if you know about them but DG Autotech are based just up the road in Kidderminster.. Graham who runs the company is about as knowledgeable on Corrado's as you could possibly hope and they always have several in getting work done on them! Well worth a visit if you need a trusty VW specialist in your area :)
Crabapple 10 Posted August 22, 2011 It's funny - the 'don't build something you can buy phrase' has been said to me lately... But, I know what I've got with my car, I know I've replaced the external fuel pump twice (2nd time with a genuine Bosch one), as well as the in tank pump, I know I've got a whole new cooling system, as well as a new cam belt, ignition system and heater matrix. I've also recently had the dents removed in the bodywork using PDR. I'm not against buying a VR6 but just worried that I will inherit the same issues again, or new ones. What would be an out of the ordinary engine swap then? 1.8t doesn't really grab me, not sure why. I have heard of DG Autotech and almost rang them for a chat earlier, figured I would wait for the verdict from my local garage first. Good to hear a recommendation though. My Dad often goes to them for advice. He sells LHD Audi TT's bought in the UK over in France where he lives, quite a lucrative business despite the exchange rate these days... Swompy 0 Posted August 22, 2011 Defo go to DG my car is there now getting a 2.8 24v put in :D I wouldnt ring this week tho as you wont get hold of any one ring next week or just leave a message ;) As for something out of the ordinary 2.0 TFSI?
Toohottotrot 10 Posted August 22, 2011 You lost me at TVR........YUK!!!!!!! Lol :)
Crabapple 10 Posted August 22, 2011 Ha ha!! TVR - what's not to like? They look pretty and they sound great!! Who cares if they are made of paper and will probably kill you. I can't afford one so it really doesn't matter, but I wouldn't say no to a Tuscan :) Thanks Swompy for the DG advice, I'll see what happens this week and maybe give them a call next week depending on the outcome. I have no idea why a 2.0 TFSI would be a good idea but I'm sure Google will help me work it out....
Toohottotrot 10 Posted August 22, 2011 Haha you had a look at one! And looks are everything, a mate of mine bought a brand new Cerbera back in the 90s. It was so bad he sued TVR! And could you drive a car who's name origin was Trevor! Cars should be named after the wind! Corrado, Scirocco, Santana, Bora, Passat etc :)
Crabapple 10 Posted August 22, 2011 Ok, so I've never been up close and personal with one, and the Trevor thing kind of takes the shine off it, but still you don't see many of them around and they always sound sooo good!! I s'pose it's the unusual factor that appeals... Long shot but did your Corrado reside in Powick for a while? Caught a glimpse of one in the village a few times but it seems to have been replaced by a Beemer??
Toohottotrot 10 Posted August 22, 2011 I go through Powick regular, live in Malvern. There is a Corrado parked in Powick, not sure who it belongs to though? Could be worse, you could like Nissan Figaros! Nissan Figaro......what's that for?!
Crabapple 10 Posted August 22, 2011 Hmm me neither, I live in Powick and it's a small place so I should know!! The one I've seen is blue possibly a 'J' reg but not sure about anything else. Always on the look out for a reliable garage in Malvern so any recommendations welcome, booked in to Straightline this week..
Toohottotrot 10 Posted August 22, 2011 I asked Straightline for a price to do a water pump on my VR6 last week.....still waiting for an answer! :( Will do it my self in the next couple of days
Jim 2 Posted August 23, 2011 Can't blame you on wanting a TVR.. always had a soft spot for some of those! Something like a Saggaris or a T350C would do me nicely :) Also rather fond of the Cerbera :)
Crispy Squirrel 0 Posted August 23, 2011 Can we see some snaps of this car ? I like photos. :)

Purple Tom 0 Posted August 23, 2011 Hey! Welcome to the forum. Nice looking motor, blackberry definitely has to be my second favourite colour, behind sherry pearl (the colour of my car) anyway! Looks like you've done a lot to it already, hope you can solve the overheating issue without resorting to a HG change. A mate of mine has got a Cerb, it cost him £12k and then immediately about another £4k on some major engine and suspension work. Then he took it to the Nurburgring, did one lap and most of the convenience electrics stopped working, so the windows wouldn't go down, the alarm would work, central locking, interior lights etc etc. We took each of the 10/11 ECU's out of the boot, banged them about a bit and hey presto, all fixed! Bloody TVR's  It sounded great though. If you're thinking of engine conversions you could always join the dark side which consists of me and 3 or 4 other crazy people and put a dirty derv TDi into your Corrado. Noisy, slow(ish), but oh so frugal :D
Toohottotrot 10 Posted August 23, 2011 Tom you should have put him a TDi engine in that Cerbera......would have been more reliable! Lol
Purple Tom 0 Posted August 23, 2011 Maybe some sort of TDi V8 in a Holeshot V8 'Busa-esque sort of way? Twin turbo, 3.8L TDiV8 :)
Toohottotrot 10 Posted August 23, 2011 Just a pair of 4 cyl TDi's........stand on one leg and squint a bit........presto hey, it's a V8! ;)
