What's all this brittle black stuff?

While doing my foliage seal I came across all this brittle black stuff in the scuttle panel area? It literally broke up on touch so I removed it all with a view replacing it.

 

Obviously some questions have now arisen.

 

1) what is it foe? I'd imagine it's some sort of rust prevention?

 

It wasn't doing much as water could easily get under it!

 

2) how do I go about replacing this stuff?

 

3) where can I get it from?

As you can see its just broken up in bits and don't want things going rusty!

i *think* that is the sound deadening that they place in the scuttle area but cant quite be sure. If it is indeed that, then id make sure its all clean on the scuttle (de-grease it properly) and then buy some soundproof material to replace it with. Yup it VW's sound deadening use all over the Corrado and other VW's where they need to dampen the panel vibration

 

Part number is 323 863 950. Comes in pack of 6, 250mm x 550mm x 2mm.

 

(also useful to know is the Butyl sealing cord on the doors for the polythene splash sheild. Part number AKL 450 005 05)

Same happened to my car, removed it and probably won't replace it as it's not caused me a problem apart from it looking a little unfinished. My money will be spent on stuff a little more worthwhile.

I was worried that water would perhaps get in there and start rusting up!

 

It does look a little unfinished too. do you know if that stuff is still available? I dont imagine it to be cheap, are there any other alternitives to that ? I did look at the link in the first reply, however I'm after something with a factory look and not bling :)

That what usually happens with older VW's.

Don't have a clue, ask a dealer on the phone with that part number. They will soon tell you availability & price. My guess if its available is £35 + VAT and you will have to buy the whole of the pack.
