Deflector plate???

Recommended Posts

Wondered if anyone could help - My g60 is drinking oil and I've been told that my car may be missing the deflector plate. The mechanic that works on the car thinks that the deflector plate was only on cars with a tin rocker cover, whereas mine is aluminium??

cheers!!

All 8v corrado's and golfs came with the deflector plate that goes under the rocker cover as far as I am aware all my golf mk2's and my corrado G60 alll came with one even with the aluminium rocker cover. If you want one the part number is 026 103 547

how much oil over how many miles?

'nana man's correct that all 8V 1.8s GTIs/G60s should have the aluminium cover and deflector plate, but even if yours hasn't, this shouldn't cause oil loss unless it's coming out of the rocker cover seal, or the oil filler cap! ;)

On a G60 there tends to be 3 major places that oil consumption can occur.

1) Valve guides and seals - these get an extra hammering due to the forced induction

2) Supercharger seals - If you don't know the history of the supercharger, get it rebuilt ASAP!

3) Piston Rings - with the added pressure from the forced induction, these can wear, but this only tends to be on thrashed engines.

Of course, there are still the normal points to look at such as the oil cooler/heat exchanger, rocker cover gasket and other things such as a dodgy oil filter seal or head gasket...

Good luck! 8)

Dont forget henny without the deflector plate the oil will be splashing into the breather pipe that comes out of the rocker cover which will be draw into the boost return pipe caping everything in oil which could be a cause of the oil loss!!! :(

Yeah, fair point... 8) I suppose it all depends on how much oil this engine is using...

8) :D The best thing for sig60 to do would be to buy the deflector plate, clean out all the pipes and if the oil loss is still excessive then it would be a good idea to check for smoke on acceleration ( worn bores or stem seals). My money is still on the deflector plate though as the returning boost from throttle body to charger will be drawing the oil through as it's returning back to charger. If this is the case I dread to think what state the pipework is in I bet the intercooler will be full of oil by now!

Jabba sport rebuilt the charger in october so it should be all swee (fingers crossed!). The engine has been rebuilt in the last 10k so that should be fine (again fingers crossed), and it doesnt burn oil at all. Will try the deflector plate.
