GSF, GPC Parts vs VW (steering rack)

Been looking up prices of bits i need, got a list thats nearly an A4 page now :lol:

 

Main things i've just looked at were ABS sensors and notice they also do a steering rack for £336, also something about £126 back if you send in old rack. Do they recon VW steering racks?

 

The only things i haven't replaced in my steering stuff is the rack and the column and still have some weird goings on.

 

Not sure whether to replace rack and column for VW parts of same spec, or do this fixed rack conversion (is that a polo column and rack?) But led to believe the cowling/surround plastics don't fit

 

I guess a new VR6 rack and column is lots of money from VW, not been there yet and my list keeps growing

I also need a new rack so I'd like to know also. Managed to find a scrap corrado with a good column but run out of time trying to get the rack out. Is your steering over assisted? Mine is so light it's scary.

On a side note I got q drive track rod ends from euro. They lasted 3 months and the rubber had disintegrated. Get what you pay for I guess?

Well if you phone up VW about a rack, I got quoted a a year back £950 and they could nt even tell me what corrado the rack was for. I would imagine the price would have gone up by now

Thats all you get with it is the rack and I think the pipes on the rack

i wonder what sort of millage you can do before the rack will have to be replaced?

 

i have a VR6 steering rack if you need ?

i did buy one from here but no guarantee how good it is, didn't want to fit it then have to remove it again.

I think ECP do a refurbed rack for the VR6 but don't quote me on that. May have to give them your old one though.

Do a search on the web, last time I was looking there were a number of hydraulic specialists that do recon racks of just about any spec, most will have a surcharge refundable with your old rack and these places supply the likes of GSF who then just add on their margin. They all seem to offer a 1yr warranty and despite the scare stories I've only ever spoken to people who've found them perfectly OK.

The steering column is another separate matter, the parts were only ever available from volkswagen and the adjustable columns fitted to most of the corrados do eventually get quite bad play in them, I think the only option now is to try to track down an early 16v or late 8v that had the fixed position steering columns, but there were never many around anyway, probably only a few hundred in total max.
