LRP better for 16v KR than Optimax / Ultimate????

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this has been done to death already, but I did a Forum search and didn't really answer my question, so here goes........

Normally in my 18.16v I use Optimax or ideally BP Ultimate, with second choice if nothing else around 'bog-standard' Unleaded. At Tesco's other day noticed they still had Lead Replacement Petrol, so put some in to see how it went, and so far so pretty damn good! Longer term what would be best to put in, 'premium' quality Unleaded such as Ultimate, or would even a 'bog-standfard' LRP fuel be better for a KR engine than even the best UL????.....Thanks in advance.

(Anticipating a rapid answer and a quick 'sticky' on this.... )

LRP is not designed for performance cars, and anyway you don't need the lead substitute in your engine. LRP was mainly designed for those cars that couldn't be converted or use unleaded fuel, namely metros and the like.

Stay well clear of it and use the 97/98 Octane stuff. You might get away with 95, some 16v's do, but most start to pink when using it.

A mate of myne had an 89 GTi 16v and he used LRP every few tanks of optimax, I dunno why but he said the car seemed to really like LRP?

i was told by my local tuning specialist to stay well clear of lrp because it burns hotter than any other petrol

The only problem that you may have with the 1.8-16v is getting the correct timing adjustment to run with different fuel octane ratings. It already has the hard valve seats & as John_wintle has already said, it has no requirement for LRP.

As far as I know the timing can only be set by using something such as a K-star fuel management system ??

Yep, that was my thinking behind the Post, that LRP might be closer to the intended fuel of a 16v than Unleaded. You just try it and see i suppose.... BP Ultimate damn fine I find, but then LRP seems to be going well too, especially lower down the rev range.
