Portent 0 Posted April 16, 2012 I'll leave this thread here for a while longer in case it changes but unless it does then there doesn't seem a huge amount of interest in the GB.
scarlet_vr6 0 Posted April 16, 2012 I'll leave this thread here for a while longer in case it changes but unless it does then there doesn't seem a huge amount of interest in the GB. my windscreen cracked a few days ago so I'll be having a new one fitted v soon. I can't travel far with it given the state it's in (plus the MOT ran out on the same day  ) but I think I have found a good fitter nr Basingstoke so, comparatively, not too far away for you. I know that a VW dealership use them if they damage any glass and they have also been recommended to me by a friend who always has his glass work done there. At the moment I'm unsure if I can use them (they aren't on my insurer's list unfortunately) but if I do, I'll let you know what their work is like, if you're interested? First impressions are very good - I popped up there on thursday and chatted to them for ages and they were really helpful. When I voiced my concerns about bad fitting etc. and that I'm really keen to get a good job done, they were very reassuring and seemed genuinely interested in helping me out. They'd even had a recent tidy up and found a brand new, unopened set of the rigid side strips and the main windscreen seal which I bought for £20. I've heard that just one of the rigid side strips is £90...
Portent 0 Posted April 17, 2012 Thanks. Will be interested to hear if you use them.
nrc 0 Posted April 17, 2012 I need some work done on my windscreen surround (a bit of welding/painting) and might as well have a new screen fitted as the current one is showing its age and/or will shatter when removed! I don't suppose either there's a decent mobile bodywork specialist who will travel to the windscreen place or whether Auto Plus will travel to a nearby bodywork place to fit the screen? VAG-hag 0 Posted April 17, 2012 NRC - Steve & Simon from Auto plus travelled to Barnsley to my car thats in the bodyhop..... worth asking if they will go to Leeds or meet 1/2 way at a paint shop?
nrc 0 Posted April 17, 2012 That's promising. If they can make it to Leeds then I know of a good mobile repairer who will come out to my house, although I'd have to check if he'll tackle this kind of job. Failing that I could always take a trip to that bodyshop in Barnsley if you rate them!
VAG-hag 0 Posted April 17, 2012 give me a nudge if you want his details mate.... certainly worth calling auto plus to chat it out. great guys!!
nrc 0 Posted April 17, 2012 I'll sound them out tomorrow and let you know. Cheers!
KIPVW 0 Posted April 17, 2012 I'll sound them out tomorrow and let you know. Cheers! They went to do Andy's in Chester so shouldn't be a problem, they do prefer to do them indoors though so if it's at a body shop that's ideal. Tell them Corrado Paul told you to call too
VAG-hag 0 Posted June 15, 2012 Just to give a little more feedback about Autoplus. I had my new screen installed by the guys today.... they are very nice to deal with indeed & the job is 100%. New screen makes a big difference :D
Ed21 0 Posted June 24, 2013 Just thought I'd add my two cents as I'm a screen fitter for National Windscreens. The Rado is well recognised by fitters as being a complete bast@rd to do largely down to trims and how the screen is recessed into the aperture but to be frank any experienced engineer shouldn't have issues fitting other than it being time consuming, leaks are pretty rare and once again really down to fitting. Some points to note - the best quality glass is Pilkington and Guardian, the more common poor quality manufacturers are: Nordglass, Safevue, RAC own brand and Shatterproof, when booking your screen replacement it is your right to say you'd prefer a particular make. From experience you can book your screen to be replaced regardless of what type of damage it has, just tell the phone operator that it's cracked and I promise you the fitter who comes out will not give a monkeys and will replace regardless, remember it's another job to the company and I would be willing bet my next pay check that it will never get questioned or even mentioned to the insurance company. The biggest thing you need to worry about when having your screen replaced is damage to paintwork around the aperture, which in itself is no real issue just as long as the fitter applies a liberal amount primer prior to glueing up, just go and look at the aperture once the engineer has removed the old one, its your right to be picky. Rusty apertures should always be sorted out prior to refitting, trust me it's worth the expense and having the car off the road. All insurance approved windscreen firms are legally bound to guarantee the screen against leaks and stress cracks. £250 is about right for replacement inc trims, I know my firm is £238 plus vat. And I'm certain we could do a very good deal on a group buy if the interest was there (just please don't bring them all to my branch as I'd get murdered by the other fitters)!!! Autoglass despite some poor feedback are probably the best trained fitters out there, they sometimes get bad feedback largely due to the amount of work they do there has to be some poor jobs just by rule of averages, just don't expect them to be cheap, they are by far and away the most expensive out there and use exactly the same products as all other firms. Think that's most of the important stuff covered, sorry for the essay.... Regards - Ed
