5 Years ago today the Nurburgring won

Recommended Posts

Well doesn't time fly! Lap 4 on the slight left hander after the Karussell the back end came swinging around which effectively put an end to my weekend, and my beloved mk3 VR6! :(

If it wasn't for the truly amazing people I went with from The VR6 Owners Club I don't know what I'd have done, for the support, paying my bill as my bank card didn't work and for the support!

Eventually once my finances recovered I was in a position to build my mk3 from all the spares I had so was more mk3 than mk2!

It turned out pretty well! 221bhp with 3.68 FD, quaiffe diff.

Miss the mk2 was a true driving machine, wasn't much that touched it on the road.

So here's my little tribute to my trip to the Nurburgring, as a bonus I came away with a broken nose and a double hernia too so carful if anyone does go :) but I will go again, with more wisdom and respect.

Bring on 2012 - the year of the corrado!

Pete

I keep thinking of going to burg but scared at the thought of crashing :(

How did you manage to get the golf back?

I was on a fast lap that day, but there was a bit of damp I didn't see, and with having a boot full of gear, was a little late in recovering :) after a bit of spinning, 32 sections of armco and 8 posts later I had to hand over €2,000 before I could get my car back! Luckily my breakdown company covered recovery and was bought back to the UK with a load of other wreaks from the ring for free, but a lot of recovery companies now exclude the nurburgring! Amazingly it still ran and was able reverse the car into the garage, had no steering though as the chassis legs were all bent out as you can see :-)

I remember this when it happened. Was a good story of help and support from fellow dubbers.

I loved my laps of the ring in my MK4 and definitely have to do it in the Rado, but as you say, you have to give it the respect it deserves!

I dont use the term "mint condition" often but the mk3 was! Full bare metal respray, about 5k worth of engine / transmission a few months before I went the ring.

It's a real gamble going to the ring. If you come off the road in a spectacular way, you're in for a substantial bill as your insurance will NOT cover you. If they have to close the track for whatever reason, you have to cover their loss of earnings, the cost of getting medical attention to you, cost of recovery of your vehicle and any damage you do to the track. And good luck finding insurance to cover you out there in your own car.

I'm lucky enough to have gone round there twice in different cars without incident but now looking back, I do wince at what could have happened and doubt I'd risk it again at least in my own car and without any kind of cover. Better off hiring a car for the track from one of the specialists out there, where you're covered insurance wise and so forth.

Jim, I did notice the Ring sticker on the back of your old valver which i now own......and you'll be happy to know that I managed to get the running problems sorted...SO IT LIVES!!!

Yep - that car has indeed been round the ring and lived to tell the tale so the sticker does very much belong there! And I'm thrilled to hear it's working again... lets see it hit 200k :)

Yes, were just talking about 2cc´s and my incident back in 2007, both coming off the track, mine hitting a wall (had to leave it in Germany, rear right wheel stuck in wheelarch, bent trailing arm on rear beam - 150 Euros damage to wall paint, recovery truck fee, 2000 Euros repair by a mate´s bodyshop in Germany), and 2cc´s hitting armco, costing him 600 quid, plus recovery truck costs, at least his VR was still driveable. Third car, Mk2 Rocco, in our group also coming off several times, but none of the damage was fatal for him, so kept on going back for more (damage to his Rocco).

The ring does bite!

I've got to get myself down to the Ring sometime very soon. Won't be using my VR6 though, but I'll use Jims old valver lol. So what time did you do Jim, I'll see if I can beat it???

Wasn't keeping time! Just thrapped round and had a good time. Believe me trying to set times on your very first outing there is the wrong sort of mindset to take.. you really want to spend some time getting familiar with the place rather than just hitting it at maximum attack on lap 1!

Only joking Jim. I used to do alot of Karting and a bit of track work, so I'm well used to "controlled aggression". I'm definately going to take the valver to the next stage of it's development as it's a very good base. It'll be lighter and more agile, so watch this space....

VR6Pete, apologies for hijacking your thread.

Ah - to be fair you're probably more experienced than me then so I'm not in a position to lecture. Sorry! :)

And sorry VR6Pete! :)

Ouch, whereabouts did you crash if you don't mind me asking?

I've got some interesting video of a mate in his mk3 GTi losing it just after Brunnchen, he miraculously manages to avoid hitting any armco (more by luck than driving skill!) but that particular corner is nasty as its off camber, a blind crest and perpetually in shadow and therefore suffers with a lack of grip from both damp and sap from the overhanging trees.

I've done about 50 or so laps now, both in the Corrado and previously in my Vauxhall-engined Mini. It certainly is a place that you need to respect as it almost exclusively takes no prisoners! Btw, this video has just appeared on youtube..watch from about a minute onwards....nasty stuff!

Wow that's pretty bad!!! Hope they were ok?!

Can't remember exactly what corner it was but can't really classify it as a corner to be honest it was so lame :) here's a video from a following car though so you can see
