Pete 0 Posted September 4, 2012 Mate of mine is doing lots of commuting now so he is looking to sell his very nice Mercedes CLK55 AMG. Offer it to me at mates rates and I'm sorely tempted, but it means I would have to sell the corrado which I've only recently got just the way I want it. Those who have read my build thread will know its had a full respray, has some super rare 17" speedlines and new tyres about 2k ago and other bits, discrete but effective ICE, Weitec coil overs and full geo 2 months ago, spared for nothing blah blah and last week had a new fuel pump fitted and has absolutely zero faults... Chances of me getting another corrado like this one would be nigh on impossible and I don't think I would have the gumption to build another one like it, but the appeal of the speed, comfort and more modern merc is a strong draw as I have a VX220 which caters for my hardcore driving and track action. So, whether you like the merc or not etc, what's the concensus on whether or not to sell the corrado, and if so what you would put it on pistonheads for? Some of these prices online are a bit of a joke as far as I can see!
davidwort 0 Posted September 5, 2012 Is this the same merc that clarkson had to pay nearly 2 grand for a coilpack for :)
captainredeye 0 Posted September 5, 2012 A friend briefly had an sl600 1k for a head light , if you can afford to run the car then fair enough go for it but I would miss my corrado
dr_mat 0 Posted September 5, 2012 Bah, mercs are for hairdressers and poofs.. ;)
Jim 2 Posted September 5, 2012 I guess I'd only echo what's been said here - I totally understand your dilemma! A Supercharged V8 AMG Merc is right up my street but be under no illusion about potential running costs here.. I'm sure you could regularly run up garage bills into the thousands if anything goes wrong with it. Is there no way you could look to store the Corrado and just run the Merc for 6-12 months to get it out of your system, then get rid? If you already have a VX, I simply don't see how the Corrado can compete in the company of those two cars.. I'd be shot of the Corrado in a heartbeat. Ricardo_lombardi 10 Posted September 5, 2012 im not a big fan off mercs my experiance off them look nice drive nice empty your wallet a lot nicer dont often go wrong but when they do they cost breakers yards love em cuz the price off second hand parts ££££ thats my veiw but its your call m8
Pete 0 Posted September 5, 2012 I thought the Mercedes would end up being the majority of chat. Any ideas as to what to advertise the VW at price wise? Assume it would be better to sell the wheels separately?
Abdul 0 Posted September 5, 2012 (edited) Is it a w208 or 209? Neither are supercharged and both make around 350 brake. Either way I'd have the merc. Corrados are bad ass but that v8 does something to you. Take it for a spin! Other then the occasional small electrical niggles they're relatively bulletproof. I mean the engines not exactly stressed making 350ish brake with such a big capacity. Services and brakes etc will rape your bank account if you go to merc. When I had my 430 I didn't even use a merc specialist let alone the stealers. They're dead easy to work with. I'll be on the hunt for a 55 soon myself and can't decide between buyin a 208 and makin it a real minter and tarting it up a bit or buying a low end 209... Both have their pros and cons. Still want an oem corrado though. So sad I missed C5 OEM twice! Edited September 5, 2012 by Abdul
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 5, 2012 Awesome cars, but would be put off by the running costs. But already said, if you can afford the running costs then go for it.
Jim 2 Posted September 5, 2012 Regarding a sale price for your Corrado I'd guess it must be worth £3,000 if indeed it's really clean / straight.
Pete 0 Posted September 5, 2012 I would hope for more but suspect your right, maybe try 4 with the wheels? Running the 55 would be bad but i had a supercharged v8 jaguar a few years back so I know the score...
jpowell79 0 Posted February 11, 2013 have just gone and bought a W209 CLK55 myself today. I love the corrado, but was getting fed up spending my weekends fixing it all the time. my storm is currently sitting on the drive with what I think is a broken fuel pump. It's now the 6-7th time in the last 6 months it's been off the road, and I just had the hump with it, so went out and bought the CLK. First impressions.....comfy, very quick, solid, looks good......but no-where near as fun to drive as my corrado! My insurance has just gone up another £450 quid! Truth be told I bought it on impulse......and now I'm looking into them on the MB forums, the future service and running costs scare me a bit! Think I'll keep it for 3-4 months then sell it, and go back to the rado.
