Identify that part...

Can someone tell me what this bit of my car is... the big grey block at the top is the lower front spolier so this pipe is underneath the engine, at the front almost directly under the carbon canistor.

 

It doesn't look at all healthy, but what is it?

 

(yes I know the sump (behind) is covered in crap, but I've had more oil leaks in the past few months than a tanker made of swiss cheese... :( )

...which might explain my never ending steering troubles...

 

Hmm... the pipe might be fine tho... just corroded because of its location, woth keeping an eye on tho...

Definately the power steering pump pipework.... Don't worry too much about slight oil leaks on them, they're a sod for it.... keep an eye on the overall level in the reservoir (just behind the battery in front of the washer bottle with a red cap on it) and make sure it's always within the limits on it and it'll be OK... 8)

 

From that photo, I'd advise getting a new sump fairly soon (when's the next oil change due?) It's starting to look a little thin at the front where the rust has flaked off... :? Good news is that they're nice and cheap from Euro or GSF! :D

Thanks Henny, next service is due in about 5K miles, but at the rate I'm racking them up, that's only a couple of months away. I'll shall see about procuring a new sump though, thanks for the tip! :thumb right:

 

[£19.99 from the ECP website... is that right? Sounds awfully cheap :lol:]

yup, about £20 sounds about like what I paid last time I replaced one... 8) They're the same on all watercooled 1.6 to 2.0 VW engines as far as I know.... 8) Just don't try and get one for a 1.3 golf... £80! :| :shock:
