Exhausts - In general

Recommended Posts

Meant to post this earlier, but work caught up with me and I forgot - but anyway...

Been having a minor blowing noise on the C for a lil' bit, so I called around today for quotes on work. To say I'm shocked is a little bit of an understatement. I called a local place near me where I've always got tires/exhausts from (nothing fancy, just run-of-the-mill stuff). So anyway, long story short - they quoted me (for the parts they could obtain) something like 350 quid for the down pipe to backbox! Is this normal?!

135 quid for back box

120 for front section

40 for mid

then there was another square shaped "cushion" (bless the doris) part which was only available from a stealer. With these prices in mind, am I better getting a stainless one?

Or does anyone have any recommendations as to what I can do to get this sorted?

Ideally, the cheaper the better at the moment as I'm just about to move out. :(

Thanks in advance

randal

£350?? did that include labour? I had a full custom stainless system fitted to mine for £300 to be fair the company was just starting up and wanted to get a good name so there was maybe a little discount in there but still! I'd look into options for custom systems mate, unless you want to keep it standard.

yup, me too Chrishill... I paid £350 for a full downpipe back (including cat bypass pipe!) custom made stainless steel exhaust when I first got my Corrado... :D That's fitted, Inc. VAT, and with life time guarantee... 8)

stevemac - cheers for that. That is a MUCH better price. Apart from the >91 Cat for a G60 - 215 quid. :( Off to Twickenham on saturday morning!

These stainless systems sound pretty damn fly tho, if I'm gonna replace the whole setup - might as well do it with a lifetime guarantee... ...and for not much more wonga than a whole standard kitout. Ah decisions decisions, I've still got a couple of other "to-do's" on my list however. So it might be bootstraps for the moment.

Cheers for the advice all

Looks very fly, but I think it's a different shape/layout to the 16v one. It's going on the ramp tomorrow morning, going to find out what I need. I'm going with your first suggestion, GSFCarparts. Gonna keep things standard, fun stuff comes out to play when I get a G60. :D

Thanks again

Found out now after inspection that the exhaust itself is AOK. However, it's the gasket on the manifold. :( Cheap part, costly labour. Anyone know of any decent garages that'll -

a) actually undertake the work

b) not bend me over for the charges

c) are in the south of england (preferably near guildford)

Most places are whining that the studs will snap, or the manifold is probably cracked or whatever. Why do I always chase these things up on a Monday? Rah.

Your studs will be far less likely to snap if an experienced mechanic does the work for you - there is a method for reducing the possibility of stud breakage. If the studs have been loose (causing manifold to leak) there is also a possibility that the manifold will warp/crack once removed. The manifold may even be leaking bacause it is already cracked !!

Luck tends to play a big part in what may happen.

Some good garages are listed here - http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5638

I've spoken to a couple of those garages before, one of the ones in Reading didn't exactly fill me with much confidence... ...can't remember exactly what was said, but I put the phone down thinking "ummm, no - you're not having my car!"

Manifold warping sounds pretty damn scary, and no doubt expensive. *sigh*. Guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet on this one.

Cheers for the advice
