Early 'Rado 16v

Recommended Posts

Hi! I just bought my first Corrado, a 1.8 16v in tornado red. I'm a bit of a VW enthusiast. I've only been driving 5 years but I've had 5 VWs so far and I'm buying another next week, a B3 Passat to replace my B5. I'm driving the Corrado as my daily at the moment but long term I wanted a project, not sure where I want to go with it yet but I just want to get winter out of the way and also get to know the car a bit before I start pulling her apart.

I know VW put these in for a reason but I would like some heat this winter thanks! haha

The blowing centre silencer gave up on me and I had the exhaust exiting underneath lol the noise and vibration was unbearable :| Eventually I do want a full stainless system but for now I just had a stainless centre section fabricated. 2 silencers removed though so it does sound better than standard! :D

Little peek at the valver.

I found something that looks like it might have once been a speaker under the dash.

I ordered a nice JVC head unit and 10cm speakers to replace the perished dash units. In addition the 200watt RMS JBL amp and 10" sub made a massive difference to my womps :D haha

I noticed a knocking sound last night when I was out driving. Listened for it this morning and it sounded like a CV joint as it went away under acceleration and braking. Had a play with the drive shafts and it looks like the drivers side outer joint. Priced it up when I got to work and it turned out more cost effective to get a new complete drive shaft which arrived this afternoon...

Tomorrow the fun begins! Should be pretty straight forward, although my impact gun was working last time I did one but my plan is to losen the hub nut first and jack up the other side to loosen the mating bolts to the gearbox. Any pointers welcomed!

Get to VW and order some replacement bolts for the drive shaft... not uncommon for one or two of them to resist coming out, which means they end up getting lunched.. and you don't want to refit them!

you seem to have managed to fit a bar type hangar exhaust to the hook type hangars on the early 16v :)

I'm not sure how long the rubber hangars will last twisted like that.

Nice to see a standard looking early 16v though, not a common sight.

My plan worked perfectly, wheel on the ground to keep the drive shaft still while I removed the bolts and hub nut. Old drive shaft out new drive shaft in, nice and easy :D Ironically while I managed to change the drive shaft quite easily I did however manage to sheer a wheel bolt while removing the wheel! :o Gonna try easy outs and heat but any suggestions are welcomed! Had an interesting test drive though... Good news is the knock has gone and even a vibration I was having when shifting down from 3rd into 2nd has gone! :D seems obvious that it would have been the drive shaft causing it now lol Bad news is I found the car is pulling to the left :\ however I noticed the front wheels are worn on the inside as well so hopefully this is just the tracking.

One of them was starting to round out but it went back in ok. I probs will do this next time I have to remove a drive shaft, good idea. :)

Thanks, I'm gonna feel guilty next year when I buy her some new wheels and coilovers! lol Got the exhaust done at Exhaust a fix in Darlington, he was quite proud of the hanger! haha can't wait to have the back box made to go with it, gonna go for the oem look but hopefully it'll sound better :D

Time for a little update. Unfortunately nothing too exciting, mainly I just wanted to show off my new alternator. :p

Battery kept going flat about a week after charging it, good excuse to buy something shiny for the engine bay. Now I just need to clean and paint the rest of it!

Btw the pulling problem turned out to be the wheels/tyres, swapped the fronts with the backs and now it's ok. Also I never fixed the hub lol lazy me I know! But I found a brand new one for £15! :D Another problem I've come across is the handbrake keeps freezing on in the cold :( Anyway here are the pics of the new bits waiting to go on. Still to buy is a timing belt kit and brake discs.

Must have had a personal plate at some point as I think anything under 30 at G reg was reserved for that use.

Nice to see an early valver getting some attention, not many left now.
