I'm NOT making this up! Spoiler is crazy!

Recommended Posts

OK guys - sort this for me! My spoiler hasn't worked since I've had the car (August 2003) except from off of the button. It's been mildly annoying and I've tried all the advice about the dreaded blue wire and still have had no joy. It behaves very strangely though - noticed that on the Rolling Road at Star Performance in November it worked fine - which I thought was unusual - but back on the road it didn't work again. Couldn't explain why - thought maybe that as the CD player face-off had been removed that might have caused it as it's likely that was the first time the car had been driven above 60 without any music on - so tried driving it at speed with the face-off removed and it still didnt work! So frustrating!

Now here is where it gets super weird and I would love anyone to be able to provide an explanation for this! A week or so ago I filled the car up at the BP and then left into a 60zone and noticed in the rear view mirror that the spoiler was up - I couldn't remember pressing the button so thought I must have done it out of habit. Next time I left the petrol station I noticed it again but again wasn't 100% certain that I hadn't pushed the button - so made a mental note to be aware of everything next time I filled up the car.

Tonight I put in £20 and went out - spoiler was down - drive out and accelerate making sure I dont touch the button and sure enough the spoiler goes up! Weird. Drive to my mates house and pick him up - leaving the engine running - drive home and accelerated up to 80mph and it didnt work!!! What's going on with it! I am beginning to think it's possessed.

If anyone can even remotely provide an explanation for this then I would really appreciate it.

Cheers

you've got one of the following IMHO:

A faulty connection onto the spoiler control box

A faulty connection onto the spoiler motor (doubtful though as you say it always works off the switch)

The blue and white wire is moving about behind the stereo, shorting to earth and screwing up the signal

Or, A dodgy speed sensor on the gearbox, although I'm not sure how this works (how many wires) from memory, and I'm reasonably sure that if it was this, then your speedo also wouldn't work... :?

Time to check some wiring me thinks... :?

Yeah, must be a connection problem and if it was the Gbox speed sensor the speedo would not work either (I had that problem and sorted with new sensor)

Never had any speedo probs and as I say it always works off the button - so do you guys reckon it's a connection problem from the sensor to the spoiler? Incidentally it always goes back down when I brake to a standstill.

sounds very much like a faulty control box (or wiring to the box) to me in that case... :?

I have this exact same problem.. well kinda!! Tried the blue wire thing etc but to no avail.. can someone please tell me where the spoiler control box thing lives.. and what it would look like. When I took out the stereo I noticed the wire had already been disconnected.

The spoiler control box is clipped behind the dash under the far right heater vent. It's about the size of a fag packet and black.

right, all wires seem ok at the control box end.. have cut the blue/white entirely to make it isn't shorting across something and still no improvement... can't be the speed sensor coz the speedo would stop working right? Can I assume that i simply have a knackered control box??
