Is a 96 Passat 1.9 TDI gearbox the same one as on the Corrado VR6?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know if these two are the same gearboxes ?.

(and where is the number located on the box).

Reason I wonder is if I should take it of my fathers Passat before scrapping it - as the box is still good (he had the car from new) - just to have it as a spare.....

Four cylinder bell housing is different, only mates to 4 cylinder blocks,so no im afraid.Dont know if anyone has removed the bell housing from a 6 cylinder and put it on a 4 cylinder box.Inside the box is the basicly the same though. The gearbox code is located on the flat surface close to the inspection cover.it will be covered with crud and difficult to see.

As above housing different and gear ratios completely different for a TDI...

I would just look at the transmission code on the data sticker (boot or log book) - if it's a CTN then keep it!
