1990 16V Tick Over Problem

Recommended Posts

I have just put a new VW short engine into my sons 1990 1.8 16v, when trying to start the engine it took ages for it to start, like one day of trying, when we evetually got it running, it was running very rough and sounds like the engine is getting to much fuel, as if the choke is on all the time, it also smells as if its a fuel problem from the exhaust, I disconeceted the vacuum hoses and it seems to run alot smoother but still not as it should, the valve timing is correct, as is the ignition timing, my son put the main fuel hose on the wrong way around, could this have caused any damage, when the car is driven its fine, and smooth, but it tries to cut out when you stop, before the engine change it was ticking over just fine, the air screw has to be almost fully out or it will not run.

any suggestions would be very welcome

Thanks

Sounds like you need to reset the base CO. The new engine will need a slightly different mix than the old one.

Long 3mm allen key required.

1) Get the car up to temperature and switch off.

2) Under the igniton coil there is a red lead with a white spade connector, disconnect it.

3) Remove the breather hose from the airbox and plug the hole in the box.

4) Restart the car. It'll probably have a slow and lumpy idle.

5) Turn the brass screw on the throttle anti-clockwise until you've got a 1000rpm idle.

6) Put the 3mm allen key in the small hole in front of the metering head rubber boot.

7) Without pressing down, turn the allen key in 1/4 turn increments until the idle smooths out. Clockwise richens.

8) When you have a smooth idle switch off and reconnect everything.

Your engine is now set to 2.0% base CO which is what the 1800 runs best at

Take it for a drive and when you pull up to junctions, the revs should drop gracefully to idle.
