rodney 0 Posted May 20, 2004 hello taken wheels off for first time to give a good clean. quite alarmed by how little thread is being used - compared to other cars i have owned. i have spoken to a couple of bods one of whom says you only need five turns when tightening (which i am def getting). the wheels are aftermarket 16 inch. if anyone can put my mind at ease before i do a 450 mile drive in a few days i would appreciate it. :) cheers rodney
PhatVR6 0 Posted May 20, 2004 You need a bare monimum of 3 threads. there should be at least 5 or 6 in the hub, so use them. buy some longer bolts.
dr_mat 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Couldn't tell you exactly how many turns there are on the standard wheel/bolt/hub set-up but I can tell you that subjectively it seems to be a lot more than just 5!!
PhatVR6 0 Posted May 20, 2004 5 threads....not 5 turns......

Henny 0 Posted May 20, 2004 thread on a VW wheel bolt is around 1.1mm per turn... 8) (don't ask why I know that, it came up in conversation with a supplier a couple of weeks ago... ;) )
PhatVR6 0 Posted May 20, 2004 well, I'm afraid that's bullshit. the thread pitch is 1.25mm IIRC? so that means the threads are spaced 1.25mm apart and for one turn, it'll move 1.25mm
dr_mat 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Which is "around 1.1mm". Depending on how "around" is around.
