Give them a wee coat of wax.

It'll not stop the dust collecting, but at least it won't stick and corrode the wheels.

Any wax should do.

I'm using Turtle Wax Extreme stuff at the minute since it's on offer in Halfords.

There is many brands of wheel specific wax available but i have never tried them. :oops:

Halfords do one but it looks very much like a silicone based product and i think it would probably just get spun off when you start driving.

I am sure that John wintle can offer some great advice regarding the above products. :idea:

I think any sort of wax from MR sheene(dont spray on yer brake discs :shock: ) to Auto glym would help its just a case of which is easiest to apply.

As has been stated, any wax is better than none.

 

Swissol now have a dedicated wheel wax called Autobahn wax, with also contains PTFE. It has been rigourously tested on the German Autobehns and race tracks to get the formula right.

 

Easy to apply and lasts for a good time.

 

General cleaning of the wheels though should be done often with just wash mix if the wheels are in good conditiona and waxed. The dust should then come off easily. Leave it a long time (more than a week) especially when the weather is warmer, and it will then start to be harder to remove.

 

Use of acid wheel cleaners (wonder wheels etc) each time you wash the wheels should be avoided whereever possible.

 

Have some lovely smelling pepermint wheel cleaner concentrate if anyone is interested......

craigbeal, if this post was on about the rubber brake disk plates that you can get which fit between the wheel and the hub, DO NOT FIT THEM! you will cause your brakes to overheat which could cause you to get into an accident... :|

well for the sake of 5-10 minutes a day max......i just have a wee container(kept in the boot) that i fill with hot soapy(cheap car-wash liquid)water and a sponge.....and just clean the dust off......stops it accumalting and staining.....and keeps the wheels nice and clean everyday

TBH the best thing to do is what Rodders does, as you are removing all the muck on a daily basis before it has had time to bake on.

 

However, on a more practical note, not many people will do this due to time constraints or other reasons (wife / kids / girl friend / knackered, etc).

 

Wheel clean disks as Henny has pointed out are a huge NO NO, due to the potential overheating of the brakes due to lack of airflow over them through the wheels. Back when they were going, BRM used to remove these items on a service and refuse to fit them, and just put them in a bag in the boot. Surprising that so many people still use them, and then wonder why their brakes don't work. "Yeah but it saves me cleaning the wheels mate!"
