Matts '92 valver

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am the proud owner of a '92 2 litre 16v corrado in aqua blue. Originally owned the car a couple of years ago but reluctantly sold it on when the starter motor died on me. Had a crisis of confidence in the car and as it was my daily I needed something I could trust (a Leon Cupra). About a month ago I was reading an old Practical classics mag and it had a buyers guide for a Corrado in it, I went all misty eyed and wondered what had become of my old steed. Logged on to Facebook and hunted down the previous owner and, literally that day, he had put it up for sale, joy! After some sweet talking of the mrs and negotiation to remove the Porsche wheels (put the car out of my price range) I bought it back :) Now it is a second car so, if/when issues occur I can sort them at my own leisure (quite handy as it happened almost immediately! Sticky brakes, passenger window), slight snags are my complete lack of mechanical skill/coordination of any kind, plus my budget, I have the grand sum of £50 a month max to spend and insurance has to come out of that too...plus repayment to the mrs for a small loan, so progress will be slow! Today I stripped the interior to trace wires and see what state it was in, pretty tidy bar one rusty area. Possibly found teh remains of an old alarm too so might have to whip that out somehow. I will attach some pics for your perusal later.

Some current photos, including the suspected alarm? Apologies for the poor quality, camera phone is ancient!

To be honest, never tried it! Only reason I think it's disconnected is the bundle of wires taped up in front. I didn't investigate properly as I had dinner to cook! Its a good car, not perfect though. Top of the windscreen is rusty, sunroof has stuck at some point so the paint has scraped off on the passenger rear side, drivers wing is rusty, passenger one is dented, couple of rust patches on the bootlid and drivers sill too but it looks like its just surface rust. Looks like both rear wings have been sprayed at some point, finish is ok but in the door shuts and below the window rubbers there is an obvious ridge between old and new. The plan is to smarten it up and put it back to almost standard, aiming to make a few small improvements but nothing major.

Not had much chance to do anything in the last week but today I bought a parcel shelf! Not the most important thing on my to do list but it was a very good price. Also picked up th eold silver VW badge for the front grill so, when I have stripped the blue paint from the grill I can pop it back in and smarten the front end up (imo)

Cleaned the boot carpet, it's not perfect but at least it's grey rather than a fetching shade of brown. Removed the elctric window motor/regulator too. Making very slow progress but I'm enjoying it all, keeps me up at night thinking what I want to do next!

Well this weekend I have yet again done pretty much bugger all! Whipped off the rear strut brace, will be putting it up for sale next week sometime when I can sort some pics. Gave the headlining a bit of a clean, it isn't great but my arms were hurting! I really want to get the interior back together, hopefully my passenger window regulator and cavity wax should be here Monday so I can get them in, just need a bit of sound deadening and a carpet cleaner and all will be well with the world. As I couldn't do much more inside I thought i'd be nosey round the front. Painted my front grill black this week as a test to see if I could avoid forking out for a new one...awful effort so that is added to the list, can tolerate it for now though. Whilst that was off I thought I'd have a look at the battery tray after seeing a few posts, all fixings rusty! Ground out the 2 top screws on the passenger headlight and the unit fell out! The third mount is rotten! Straightened it up and rust remedied it but I think it may need a visit from a welder :( On the plus side, the battery tray looks pretty solid! Gave it a clean up, few patches of surface rust, again remedied, ready for a lick of paint next week. Just putting some old black metal paint on it, as it's covered I don't mind so much, at least it will be protected. Finally, back to blacked the headlamp surround, came up ok and matches the grill pretty well, maybe a replacement isn't so necessary. Will try and get some pics up next week, the woman has been using her laptop solidly for work the last 2 weeks and I can't upload anything on my work one :(

Well it's been a slow week or so! Went to my local stealers, couldn't help with the bits I need unless I have the chassis number...which was at home...30 miles away, grrr! Should have seen that coming! So, as it stands, new electric window motor still isn't fitted so thumbs have been twiddling! Finally got the drivers side light out, pig of a job! The third screw at the back would not shift! Much brute force and swearing finally shifted it, no idea how I didn't break the headlamp! Rust treated and painted a few bits around the light mounting points, that's it, depressing really!

A pic of the battery tray before and after :)

Well she has remained untouched for 2 weeks! Combination of bad weather and lack of time. Just ordered rivets and screws to hopefully (finally) sort the passenger window and get her water tight and put the front back together. Once that's done I can get the interior clean and back in, progress may yet be made!

Also found this wire, most confused as to its function. Comes out near the airbox, can't tell if it's supposed to be attached to something or not. The tips look like they are a oxidised but they are cut clean.

Interior is back in! Literally not touched the corrado for a month, started up straight away, left it running whilst I re-fitted the front seats ready for a drive but...tax is out, boo!!! MOT due beginning of November so not wanting to tax and the 1 month rolling doesn't start til November :( Pretty sure it will fail the MOT on rear brakes if nothing else, they seem very weak. On the plus side, the mrs says that after the wedding next year we can save up to get some welding done, means I can get the windscreen surround sorted :)

What colour are the wires that are cut on the 16th July picture?

I'm guessing that they're for the temperature sensor that sits on the top of the rocker cover that drives the fan overrun. The radiator fan should keep on running when you park the car up and it's hot under the bonnet

I'll go and try to get a picture of what you should have.

Thanks for that lesarcsneil, the wires are red & white and yellow 7 brown. Come to think of it, the fan does keep going when turned off, you may well be right.
