feeenix14 10 Posted January 20, 2015 Hello insurance experts I need some help if you could oblige. My Car is currently for sale but as I have a new car already its just sitting on my driveway uninsured which i dont like, and i dont think its doing the car any good being sat in the ice and not being moved. My question is this - is it possible to get some short term cover on it for around 4 - 6 weeks ? That way I can give it a few rides out to keep it ticking over and such ? Thanks for your help
Chuggs1 10 Posted January 20, 2015 Yes you can - I think most insurers offer it but I also know if you Google it some specialist come up Her are the specialists through money supermarket but call your own first perhaps http://www.moneysupermarket.com/short-term-car-insurance/
Jim 2 Posted January 20, 2015 It's worth just looking into a normal (full) insurance policy that you then just cancel again after the 4-6 weeks.. it may work out cheaper? I can't say 100% that it WILL be cheaper (indeed I was talked into doing similar on a car I needed to insure for a month or so and ended up getting screwed by the insurer............) but depending on the policy, where you buy from, and how much of a rebate you get, it could work out better. Definitely ring around.
seanl82 23 Posted January 20, 2015 You can get lay up insurance which may be best, but a classic policy with 1k miles should be pretty cheap - certainly cheaper than cover for a couple of months from any highstreet type company anyway.
feeenix14 10 Posted January 20, 2015 Thats what i thought, I havent tried my new insurance company because they are a van specialist but i will try them, someone at work has said if i take out another policy to cover the rado then i cant use my 7 years NCB because they are being used on the van ? So I will be trying to get cover with no NCB ? how frustrating, someone else has said to just take some cover out and then ring up and cancel before the end of your cooling off period (either 14 or 21 days apparently)? Probably a bit unethical and I will probably lose whatever deposit i have put down to start with. Confusing flipping minefields !!
Chuggs1 10 Posted January 20, 2015 If you go for a classic car insurance I don't think they take NCB into account anyway as they are fairly cheap upfont and can be even cheaper based on low miles as per what Sean said above.
seanl82 23 Posted January 20, 2015 When I renewed some companies would match my NCB on the policy, but they were still coming in at over £500. I went with a company called markerstudy through Adrian Flux. £198 with a 4k mileage limit. Only option it doesn't include is recovery which I have independent through AA, and key cover. As I said a low mileage allowance should be much cheaper.. .....emphasis on the SHOULD though! Lol
feeenix14 10 Posted January 20, 2015 I've just done a quick compare the market and cheapest i can get with playing around with the settings is £168. A little bit too much for a car that should hopefully be going to a new home in a matter of weeks :shaking: I'll see if my van insurance will cover it but doubtful. If not its back to starting her up and a trip up and down the cul-de-sac. Disgraceful treatment of a car that should be stretching its legs down a bypass.
