Cams & Chips for 9A 2.0 16v

Recommended Posts

After lots of research, into both the above I still can't make up my mind what cams to put into my Corrado.

I've narrowed down my choice to the following.

Inlet Exhaust

Kent 264 deg 10.49mm 258 deg 10.26mm (Reground KR cams)

Newman 268 deg +1mm over std 278 deg +1mm over std (Reground KR cams)

Schrick 268/276 or TSR schrick copies.

Every specialist I've spoken to gives different opinions.

Some say Schricks will be fine with smooth idle and only slightly reduced low end power

others say it will be rough.

Has anyone tried any of the above cams in a 9A running standard spec KE-Motronic?

I have been advised chipping this system is a waste of time by several people including someone at Bosch, but also been told its well worth doing by others.

cost wise i'd look to replace your 9a inlet cam with a kr item in conjunction with a cylinder head port and polish, the cat does restrict the 9a AFAIK so it may be worth investigating a cat by-pass pipe or KR downpipe (for non MOT days ;) )

you should get a solid 160bhp with this and dependant on the condition of the engine possibly approach 170bhp.

High lift cams WILL push the power and torque band up the rev range, the question is do you want good low and mid range (9a inlet cam) good top end (high lift schricks etc..) or a good compromise of the KR inlet cam???

Not sure on the re-mapping of the KE system, but you may be able to gain a couple of hp at the top end by richening the fuelling once the headwork is done.

Every time I would say spend the money on headwork before a new set of high lift cams.

Should have given a full spec, shouldn't I!

I have mildly gas flowed my head and inlet and exhaust manifolds. Have a full cat back magnex and replacement filter eliment, also looking into modifying the airbox to accept a cold air duct from behind the grill. I have a cat by pass pipe which looks like a cat but is empty, I'm considering cutting this open and welding in perforated pipe and fillling it with rockwool to make a straight through silencer, because the exhaust is a bit louder than I would like, and I don't think its ideal for smooth airflow, obviously i'll re-locate the lambda probe so it sits in the gas flow rather than rockwool.

I also have a KR inlet cam.

So after all this work its definately faster but not quite enough yet.

Its a difficicult choice between extra power when I want it and everyday driveability. My previous car was a Mk2 8v GTI - I loved the grunt that had, but the 16v needs to rev.

What spec is yours? I take it you have mild cams.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME

I have recently bought a J reg 2.0L 16v corrado and cannot for the life in me find any chips to increase the power of the car.

its a beautiful old car in pristine condition, but it has obviously been driven to the limit and done not have any pickup at all, and seems to lack grunt, for example i put my foot to the floor and could only get 110MPH out of it which i was not chuffed with.

it needs a few pipes replaceing and the usual service that you do when you buy a new , old car, you know air filter, fuel filter, points plugs and so on, so please help me i need as mush advice about parts, chips ,exhaust systems anything to not let my friend who has a Vauxhall Calibre also J reg and 2.0i 16v beat me, for the sake of this forum help

Well something is very wrong with the car if its only getting 110MPH! Should be able to do 130MPH or more - not that I suggest you try that on public roads.

Get it sorted out with a good 20,000 mile service at a reputable VW specialist (AmD, Stealth, etc) and get them to do a tune up.. will probably do wonders for the car and have it behaving a lot better.

For the record, chipping a Corrado 16v isn't a hugely rewarding process as you don't get a lot of power freed up for your money.. a decat and good exhaust (Milltek, Magnex, Supersprint, Jetex) would probably be money better spent, and should help you make the car a bit freer revving :)

But if all out speed and performance is what you were after, a relatively standard 2.0 16v is probably not where you should have put your money.

ITS A BIT OF AN OLD CAR AS IT HAS DONE 118,000 MILES, BUT I STILL EXPECTED A BIT MORE, the loom also seems to have been ripped out ans put back wrong, i think i need some bloody good advice, from as you said a good specialist, the only prob though is that im a little short on the funds so any idea about cutting cost, coz my dealer down here in plymouth was talking like £2 - £3,000 for just to service and a new loom and a small engine rebuild, i am serious i want my machine to come back to life, but not to kill me in the process

Funnily enough I have a mate with an H reg 16v Calibra and in std form compared to my Corrado his has more mid range grunt. Since then I've added a KR inlet cam, it already has a magnex exhuast, and most importantly make sure timing, fueling etc are correctly set. If done right it should be a match for his car, but still won't be a fire breathing monster.

As far as chipping is concerned there does not appear to be much scope for improvement, for the money AMD quoted £300, you could get a pair of re-ground fast road cams - much better option.

By the way mine has done 144,000 miles and is going better then ever.

Phil,

I now have a brand new audi 6A block (basically same as a corrado 9A 2.0 block) and a ported/flowed KR head and manifolds, As the car is a 1990 1.8 16v I have no cat and a standard VAG downpipe but with a Janspeed stainless system. I've stuck with the standard K-jetronic injection system and have standard KR cams. Before the 6A block (which is still running in) I had a bored out KR block which with the headwork gave about 165-170bhp and 145-150lb/ft depending on which rolling roads and which runs you choose! I like the compromise of the KR inlet cam although I'm sure peak hp could be improved slightly with higher lift cams. I'd be expecting to see similar figures with the 6A bottom end but I always had a piston/bore problem on the bored KR block so I wouldn't be surprised if the new engine ends up slightly better.

If you look at the plots on GVK's website it is pretty clear that it's near impossible to maintain the good torque of standard cams low down with the really high peak HP figures of high lift cams.

150 in some cases ;) ;) again NOT on public roads!!! track days are the best :)

anyway Justin sounds like your car isnt running right even with 118K mine had 120K before it let go on a 1.8 16v engine and that pulled strong until 130 again on track :)

Also like mentioned before and i keep saying Chipping a 2L 16v engine is pointless and a waste of money ull get more for you money from a head rebuild and work (i.e porting lean the fuel system etc) than a silly chip

just my 2p's worth

p.s i know the 1.8 16v used a slightly different ECU system but i was gettin 185bhp from my engine ;)

the thing is that i don't have any tchincal knowledge at all about this car and have no idea what to do so if any of you live near Plymouth could you mail me and meet me and the car to have a look at it and tell me where to start. and maybe after a while i will have the experience and knowledge you all take for granted.
