gearbox bracket snapped

Recommended Posts

Had a strange knocking and steering feel when coming of the accelerator today, checked the gearbox mount and the bracket between gearbox and mount has sheared right through, engine freely lifting!!

Anyone had this happen before? And how easy is it to replace on a driveway?

Not heard of it before but i don't read every thread so might of been mentioned. I just had my 220,000 original bracket soda blasted and it doesn't look it has any weakness in it. There are alloy but hadn't corroded much.

From memory one of the three bolts onto gearbox is hard to get to. So awkward i left one bolt out in the end and was fine. (replaced it now though)

I think this might have something to do with the group buy poly front engine mount......too much vibration being passed through the rear mounts?

It has the wrong bolt holding it down to the sub frame. I wonder if that has caused it. Should be a wider hex bolt.

Ahh, OK! I did think it looked like it would benefit from a washer or something to spread the load.

I think it was last changed by a well respected garage so assumed something like that would have been picked up

Hopefully VW still do the bolt?

Ended up getting a new bracket from VW, only 3 left now before they go obsolete.

About £36...although more like £50 if you also want all 4 bolts. One of them was about £5 on it's own, and as far as I can see the only difference is it's a bit shorter that the others!!
