Remap

Have decided to do nothing more to my car with regards to mods. Have upgraded brakes and have eiBach pro springs and bilStein b8 dampers giving a much nicer ride. But just want one more mins thing done... A remap. Just to improve the low down power curve. Can't recall afford stealth but heard some one on the forum used to do a good one and about half the price of stealth.... Who was it? Thanks

I contacted a firm who specialise in remapping and their reply was that Corrado's can't be remapped.

 

LOL. Probably best to stay well away from those folks then cause they're talking nonsense. I, like a hell of a lot of people on here, have had a different map put on their Corrado's, so I can quite happily tell you they can be remapped.

don't do it m8, it is not worth skimping on

 

you will likely end up with a poor power curve & flat delivery

 

part of the benefit of a stealth map is the fact that Vince is one of the best people in the country for mapping our VR's. I believe they are rather tricky & not like more modern cars in terms of mapping

 

part of the reason stealth cost what they do for remaps is due to it needing to be done whilst the car is on the rollers. from what I remember the VR has an 'open' mapping program which can be manipulated whilst the engine runs on the rollers. thus it is the skill & knowledge & experience of the person doing the map

 

I also believe this is the reason the VR manual states to not apply any pressure on accelerator when starting up, as the ECU takes care of choke & fuel trimming etc

 

rather than a 'closed' map, such as on a Mk5 golf, where the mapping program is static & as such the new map is uploaded to the car whilst NOT on the rollers & I believe can not be then tweaked as much the former

 

in all honesty m8 I don't think you will really see or feel the benefit of your hard earnt £'s remapping a standard setup. yes you may get a slightly better power delivery as the VW map is kinda lumpy when you see the output but how much of that you will feel under your right foot I am unsure

 

Vince is a nice guy m8, you could give him a ring & post the question to him. I am confident he will give you a sensible honest answer.

 

by all means mention me if you like, im sure he will remember me as he had to put a lot of work into my VR & his right hand man was the one who found my valver on ebay & told me about it, which as you know I then brought it back lol

 

akacheesy - I can definitely confirm the VR is mappable as I have had mine done & got the power curves to show for it. I would imagine the people you spoke to gave you that answer as they can only do 'static' mapping

Like Jim I have had it done but not by Stealth, they do make a considerable difference to both a standard car plus one with cams etc.

That's great news, obviously they were indeed talking bollox. So where, and how much/?

 

mine was Stealth Racing in Banbury - think they are £400 notes all in

Standard VR6s run very little ignition advance in the low>mid rpms, so the main improvement is sharper throttle response, plus a bit more peak power if the rev limiter is extended to 7000.

 

Probably best to do it alongside some SP263 cams and then you start to really notice the gains. I remember Vince at Stealth saying he was so impressed by those cams it wasn't really worth bothering with a Schrick / VSR!

was I correct in the bit about open & static mapping differences? (just out of personal interest)

 

with 263's & a BMC I got pretty much bang on 10% gain after Vince's map

 

however that was with a very ageing, probably original, exhaust & CAT

 

if money would have allowed I would have waited until I got my 2.5" straight through with hi flow CAT until the remap but I don't think it would have crept the power up by too much more (hence why ive not bothered with another map now the longlife exhaust is a rocking)

 

it is worth a mention that the difference between my VR & the gf's old standard storm in terms of feel under foot, delivery of power, crispness of throttle response is night & day!

 

my VR now has that 'whaa, whaa' rapid kinda rev'ing like a motor bike :D

Hey buddy, the VR6 has a WORM chip in it (Write Once Read Many) so the original one needs hoiking off the motherboard and a rewritable one put in it's place, then a map can be written to it as many times as you like on the dyno. To stop rival companies copying it, Vince et al use a special chip socked with encryption in it. He also has to use an ECU emulator or something when mapping, so it's a lot of wires and boxes all over the scuttle area! Probably why an older style maps are little more expensive.

 

With the later cars like the MK5 R32 and GTI etc, they can be mapped up the OBD2 port (which is what Revo et al do) so no need to open the ECU :) With the newer stuff it's more about hacking into the software, so again the costs of that need to be recouped.

 

Yeah I loved my 2.5" Techtonics system, sounded really nice and had no problem running 400hp with a turbo, so not restrictive in the slightest!

 

If you want extra crispiness in the throttle, fit the G60 final drive!

that was kinda what I thought, new ones is altering the software whereas older is more in depth work (in synopsis lol)

 

thanks for the tip about the final drive - it is something I keep lingering in the back of my mind & if I ever have to have the gearbox rebuilt I will get one put in

I bought the Techtonics 2.5" downpipe during black friday last year, am seriously thinking of buying the whole system this year and selling my magnex.

 

Then i think i may as well replace the original 224,000miles catalytic convertor for a sports cat. Would i have to buy one in 2.5"?

 

I assumed the magnex is 2.25"
