Eug 0 Posted July 3, 2004 Mine didn't release the passsenger's side and I know the remedy is to loosen the nut at the end of the cable and then take up some of the slack, but now my cable has snapped off at the lever end. Is this a DIY job to insert a new cable and does anyone have any pics/instructions if they've done it before ? Any advice appreciated. Eug
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 3, 2004 Yeah it's DIY. You need to get a new bowden cable first. It has 2 sections of PTFE sleeving and 2 plastic end caps. The first sleeving is from handle to first release arm and the second section of sleeving spans the gap above the radiator. 2 foam pads are also included with the rad section of sleeving. You may aswell get the whole lot tbh. It's pretty easy tbh, shouldn't take more than an hour. Take your time with the cable adjustment (nearside headlight cable clamp) as it's all too easy to get the offside arm to release and not the nearside one  You'll see the cable path as you take the old one off as there are 2 holes the cable has to go through above the radiator. Pull the cable through the clamp and ensure there is no slack, tighten up the 8mm bolt and you're good to go.
Eug 0 Posted July 3, 2004 Cheers dude. Only future problem I've noticed is the the little 8mm bolt on that brass "thingy" at the end of the cable looks a bit corroded. Do you get a new one with the cable ? And what's a good palce to ge the cable ? VW stealer or somewhere like GSF ? Thanks in advance.
corradovr6sc 0 Posted July 3, 2004 You don't get the brass trumpet clamp but it's best to get one as the nut will probably just snap off. I'd also get a few extra barbed clips for the lever end as they can snap really easily.

corradovr6sc 0 Posted July 3, 2004 In the pic there's a little clip which holds the cable onto the lever. You should get one with the new cable but it's definitely worth getting 1 or 2 spare.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 3, 2004 Yep, agreed with comments made so far. The cable clamp may look corroded (mine is) but it will be fine. Make sure you clamp the cable clamp with some pliers when undoing the bolt and it will slacken off OK, otherwise the 'piano wire' inside the cable will just twist instead of the bolt loosening. Use some copper grease when reassembling the clamp and it will prevent seizures. Also apply plenty of white lithium grease to the release catches.
