robrado974 1 Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) Evening chaps , I'm looking for some advice . I'm currently entering the court stage with my Goof TSI . It's a big ask I know, but does anyone know an AA mechanic or someone that understands the modern engine ,that could answer a few questions for me please . These are just mechanical engine type questions. I won't hold you to anything, I just need a few pointers on the car, mainly timing stuff really . Many thanks , Rob Edited January 23, 2017 by robrado974
Spuddy 10 Posted January 24, 2017 What you need to know specifically mate? I'm a independent vw audi specialist now and previously worked at mean dealer audi. I have access to all alot of technical info also. Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
robrado974 1 Posted January 25, 2017 Thanks for replying, I will put a tensioner question up when I get home from work .
robrado974 1 Posted January 25, 2017 Hi spuddy .long story short , I was daft enough to buy an 08 plate Golf TSI . I'm sure you know the problem with these engines. 6 months after buying it the chain slipped. We sent it to a rebuild centre. The bloke rings me and tells me the engine has been patched up to sell. The timing chain cover was glued on and there is paint on the timing wheel , this indicates that someone has tried to change the tensioners without the correct tools . After some digging and talking to the previous owner we found out VW diagnosed these problems. The owner didn't want to pay for the work , so he traded it to VW, they sent it to auction, where the dealer we bought it from sold it to us . We are taking him to court. He says there is no way you can change the tensioners without the correct tools we haven't touched it . So why is there paint on the wheel??. I've been told you can do it the old fashioned way? I just need to know if it can be done please ?. I have pages of evidence but it's to long winded to write it all down . Many thanks Rob
Spuddy 10 Posted January 25, 2017 The paint on timing wheels may be just a reference mark to get the chain back on in the same position as it was remove. This helps with check the position as if you imagine putting multiple marks on the chain and the sprockets, you can be assured that if all the marks line back up, ASWELL as the oem markers which will be on the top cams and bottom pulley etc. It is possible to do all the work without specialist tools, except removing the bearing saddle behind the upper timing cover. There is a special tool to remove the reverse thread bolt which is also part of the variable cam timing. Once that's off the rest is done without locking tools as you are supposed to set the tdc with a dti gauge through the cylinder 1 spark plug hole. Again that is the proper way of doing it but it can be done without. The top cams again are free ish to move to adjust getting them lined back up with the marks. Just changing the main tensioner (the revised recalled one) should only need the lower cover removing. If you can hold the chain under suitable tension which isn't much, your able to replace the tensioner. You may find the upper timing case cover has been removed for other issues like the failed bearing saddle. Also a known issue with these engines. Do you know which tensioner version was installed in the engine when it failed and slipped the chain? I believe it 2012 they revised the tensioner or made it a recall to replace. The early style was terrible, the later still doesn't fill me with confidence but it is better. Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
robrado974 1 Posted January 25, 2017 (edited) Many thanks spuddy , great information, which is much appreciated. I have no idea what they changed . Again, without explaining the whole story on the phone which is quicker than writing for half an hour its hard to put it all down . when we test drove the car my Mrs drove the car for a mile if that , hard on the peddle etc . I got in it to drive it back ,as soon as I got it in to second the engine warning light came on , it went in to limp mode . I told the bloke at the garage and he said "oh it's probably a sensor ". We will sort it for you . I know only to well now I should have walked away then !. We picked up the car and all was well , 2 months later I noticed a lack of power. We took it back and it was diagnosed as the turbo sensor . So , when I got the VW diagnostic report, from when the first owner had the problems, guess what? Both sensors and the problem I have already mentioned were listed !. When I asked him for the info on what was done to the car when the warning light came on , he told me an old mechanic did it for us, he can't use a computer so he writes it down , it will take me a week to find it .we never received the info .I think they bought this car cheap at auction, he said the warning was not on , well it does not turn itself off, it was on when it left VW. Its my opinion that they changed the cam sensor and turned the light out via the ross tech or vagcom . Test drove it , the light stayed off and they thought the problem was solved . When we test drove it the light came on again because replacing a sensor only works for a few miles . When the light came on again they thought , crap , we have to get it fixed . We all know its 1200-1600 for VW to fix it , so they bodged it . Edited January 25, 2017 by robrado974
Spuddy 10 Posted January 25, 2017 Ah OK, sounds a pretty traumatic experience of owning the car in all honesty. I'm happy to give you any of the technical repair manuals if you require them. The last rebuild I did for one of those engines for a fully rebuilt head (16 bent valves) full chain kit, head gasket etc etc was just under 1700 quid. Should give you an idea of what you will get quoted to make sure nobody is ripping you off further. Hope you get it resolved or some money back atleast! Also always happy to discuss on the phone. Pm me if you ever need my number. 👍 Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
