Questions from a new G60 owner!

Recommended Posts

Howdy all. A year after passing my test and driving an awful P Reg'd Ford Escort Encore 1.3 rattler I have just purchased a red 1991 J Reg'd G60. It has had the following modifications:

Supercharger rebuilt to stage S4 (in Sept 1991), engine chip and pulley, induction kit (what the hell does that mean?), new boost pipe and a Cobra Sport stainless steel exhaust system. It certainly goes in comparison to my old car! Such a pleasure to drive!!

Obviously I am expecting to be spending a lot on fuel but the on board computer is telling me around 17 mpg's (around town, have yet to take it on a long journey). Is this all I am to expect fuel wise?!? I filled up the tank yesterday and already it is down to jst below 3/4 and I have done only 40 miles. I have put my foot down a few times (as is to be expected until or if the novelty wears off) so maybe this has some bearing on it?

Also what do you imagine the BHP to be on this car with the mods?

What is the best type of oil to use?

Another thing, in first gear if I take the revs up to the red it tends to 'kick' me out of gear. Is this a normal precautionary measure to stop me blowing up the engine or could something be wrong? Sorry if these questions seem stupid but I am a relatively inexperienced driver who loves Corrado's!

I have heard it is essential to look after the supercharger as negligence can prove costly. Any tips on how to do this or what to look out for?

Thanks in advance!

Howdy all. A year after passing my test and driving an awful P Reg'd Ford Escort Encore 1.3 rattler I have just purchased a red 1991 J Reg'd G60.

Congratulations ;)

It has had the following modifications:

Supercharger rebuilt to stage S4 (in Sept 1991), engine chip and pulley, induction kit (what the hell does that mean?), new boost pipe and a Cobra Sport stainless steel exhaust system. It certainly goes in comparison to my old car! Such a pleasure to drive!!

Do you have any further history to back up the supercharger other than a reciept from 1991? An induction kit is a replacement for your standard airbox, so down at the front of the drivers wing instead of a big black box with a pipe running into the supercharger, you should have a big purple cone or something similar!

Modified G60's are at their absolute worst around town - especially if sitting stationary for extended periods of time. As well as the engine running, the supercharger is also constantly driven so it puts a noticable drain on fuel consumption. Try and take the car for a long steady drive on the motorway at around 70MPH, and your fuel consumption should easily soar up to around 30-35MPG. So on the open road, and driven sensibly, the G60's are ok - but crawling around town, or thrashing the arse off the car will result in alarming fuel economy!

Also what do you imagine the BHP to be on this car with the mods?

Probably about 170-180BHP?

What is the best type of oil to use?

VW's Synta Silver (10w/40) - buy it from any VW dealers!

Another thing, in first gear if I take the revs up to the red it tends to 'kick' me out of gear. Is this a normal precautionary measure to stop me blowing up the engine or could something be wrong?

No, thats not normal - i'm not quite sure what that symbolises so hopefully someone else might chime in with an answer.. but see below about G60 precautionary tips...

Sorry if these questions seem stupid but I am a relatively inexperienced driver who loves Corrado's!

We all have to start somewhere... i'm not much further up the ladder from a technical point of view, but you do learn a LOT on this forum so stick around!

I have heard it is essential to look after the supercharger as negligence can prove costly. Any tips on how to do this or what to look out for?

Well always keep the car below 3000RPM until your oil temperature has hit 80 degrees centigrade - the charger depends on a good fluid oil supply, and if you are nailing the car from cold when the oil is not at its operational temperature, you are going to do long term damage - this is true of any engine really anyway, but is very important on the G60 engine!

The charger should be inspected (and if required rebuilt) every 60,000 miles - if your charger hasn't been done in this time then its time to get it looked at for peace of mind. If you have a smaller pulley on the charger (increases rotation speed of the charger - smaller the pulley, faster it spins) this will be extra wearing on the charger - you need to get it checked out every 30-35,000 miles!

Try and get the oil replaced every 6000 miles (using a genuine VW oil filter from the dealers - don't use a generic Halfords jobbie!) as again clean oil helps keep the charger in check!

its not a good idea to redline a g60 specially if its been chipped and pulleyed the chargers have a habit of going bang

i get about 30 mpg out of my standard g60 on average running on bp ultimate :(

it shouldnt kick out of gear if you redline it should just cut the power there could be a gearbox problem or it could be worth checking your engine mounts as too much engine movement may cause it to jump out of gear but i could be wrong :?

Maybe thats what its doing, cutting the power. Its like the car is telling me to change gear (as you would expect at full revs). It doesnt actually kick me out of gear into neutral, i think I worded it wrong. The car sort of jolts, is this what you mean by cutting the power? Just done a boost test too. I couldn't quite get to redline in 3rd and 4th (bloody traffic) but I was still getting around 1900. Is this a good sign?

Jim - I have a certificate from Jabba Sport (the car came with stacks of invoices dating back to 1991) with the vehicle reg on and the receipt.

Thanks for the rapid responses guys!

dont be too trusting of the MFA computer. it does tell lies esp if you have a none standard configuration.

the chargers are pretty sturdy if lokked after properly. replace the charger timing belt as a precautionary measure.

dont over rev the charger. this has a bad effect on oil seals in the charger. i go 6000 with the 65mm pulley tops.

as jim says dont screw it from cold. the oil pressure when cold is around 80psi and the charger doesn't want to feel this pain.

r u hitting the rev limiter? if so dont rev it so high. the charger wont ike you hitting the rev limiter. if its a sudden cut in power maybe timing is being pulled or the map isn't quite right.

get an air/fuel gauge and a boost gauge if you havent got them already. they can help diagnose problems pretty well

as for fuel. the AF gauge will help you work out if

1. O2 probe is functioning

2. idle/WOT swithc is working properly.

3. warm-up time before full O2 system funtionality (blue CTS)

get the charger inspected ASAP... if it's 13 years since it was last inspected, you may find yourself with a large bill for a new charger if you keep on hammering it and taking it up to redline...

It sounds to me very much like the "kicking out of gear" is you hitting the rev limiter... this is REALLY not a good idea... the extra stresses that this puts on the engine can make all sorts of nasty (and usually expensive!) things happen...

Have a word with someone like G-man (Darren) about your charger, I'm sure he'll be able to help you out... ;)

Welcome to the forum! 8)

*cough* It's Henny *cough*

Depends on the milage... 3 years is getting close to 50K miles if it's been used for average milage use... Personally I'd get it inspected anyway just for peace of mind... There's some not so good stories about the work Jabba's been doing to G60s recently that made me have mine inspected less than a year after getting mine stage 4'd by them.... All I'll say is that I'm glad I did get it seen to again! ;) :?

Admitedly this was with some serious partsclub discount... £8.49 +vat

But, even if they only give 10/15% off its usually cheaper and sometimes you get a free oil filter too...

Same with the G12+ too, on the shelf its more but discounted its about £3
