What is the optimum size rad for a charge cooler?

Recommended Posts

Is anybody running a custom charge cooler (either G60 or forced induction VR)and have any recommendations for the optimum rad size based on experience? (Other than bigger is better).

I am looking to replace the stock Intercooler on my G60 with a charge cooler.

I thought the intercooler was more efficient?

Its one of the first things the RS Focus boys replace on the MK1's is the charge cooler...

Bigger is better though. You can never have too much cooling capacity when it comes to cooling hot metal. Just fit the biggest rad you can.

Have a look into some OEM installations, such as Jaguar, Mercedes SL55, Mercedes AMG A45 etc for inspiration.

Mine was mega effective, but it was also a lot of baggage to carry around with a 3 gallon tank and a pump in the boot. My radiator was a twin pass Setrab and was the length of the plastic grill under the bumper, so approx. 9" x 36" from memory.

Thanks for the reply Kevin.

I have a pair of Mercedes Charge Cooler from a M275 V12 Twin Turbo. Given this engine in stock tune runs 600bhp and 22 psi of boost I figured 1 would be more than adequate for a mildly tuned G60.

I can't fit the Merc rad so am looking at various other options pref. something stock I can buy rather than have made.
