Re- fitting front splitter

Recommended Posts

I am going to sound like a complete doughnut but here goes.

Took my splitter off a few weeks back to change back to a 90mm from a 50 I also took the support bar off to sand down and repaint,

Buggered if I can remember how the support bar goes back on.

Doing the job now so a quick answer would be apreesh.

Thanks dazz

Sounds like either the threads are gone on the shoulder retaining bolts, or in the retaining plate.

You could try new longer bolts with nuts on the ends, if the threads are gone in the retaining plate.

Or you could weld new nuts with the same thread to the back of the retaining plate,

so then you'll be able to bolt it back up.

The retaining bolts are or were available at VW Heritage, and the retaining plate I've seen is available at VW Classic Parts.

Hope this helps

Si

Hello mate,

once you're on the Classic Parts site,

you can enter the part number,

in the search menu at the top of the home page, or you can pick from the listed VW model's in the far left column, again on the home page.

Once you've found the item you're after,

click / tap on it to open up the info page, so for example if you typed in part number 00-535807181

"Front splitter retaining plate.

Secures front splitter to Base of front bumper" = €40.95

Once it opens up you should see the part number in big bold numbers, then below it there's normally a picture/photo or diagram of the part, and the price in euro's is underneath, well that's what it's like using a mobile smart phone.

If using your computer it'll open up to reveal the item in photo / diagram form, again with the price in euro's below it, but then you have to click on the photo / diagram again to see the info page on the item.

Here you will be able to see the product details including price again, and weather they have stock or not.

Also you can see what model's of car the part you clicked on will fit.

Also you can click on additional info which normally shows / conforms the part number, what years of model the part will fit, and measurements of the item if it's a bolt on part.

Plus you can click on (find related products via drawing) which basically allows you to find/see most or all the part numbers related to the item you've been looking at.

Hope this helps

Si

Thanks Si that was a great help.

Going to take my plate in to work on monday and see if our fitter can weld me some nuts on.

That sounds like a much better option for strength.

Begrudge spending 40 odd quid when my plate is sound apart from the holes.

I would try bigger screws but i don't have a clue about how the width of the thread is measured ?

The thread is measured to obtain the bolt diameter i.e if it's 6mm 8mm and so on,

also you can measure the thread pitch, which basically tells you if the thread is 1.25mm or 1.50mm or 1.75mm,

I might have my front splitter bolts to hand, as my Corrado is in bits as I'm still doing loads to it,

give me 10 minutes and I can probably tell you what the bolt diameter and thread pitch are, I've got a feeling the pitch is 1.25mm but I'll check.

Cheers Si its nice to see you can still get some help when you need it.

I will need bigger screws so wonder if you could tell me what size i would need to go up to so they are more likely to fit ?

Head of bolt =10mm hex head

Bolt length 35mm

From bolt hex head to tip of bolt thread.

Bolt shoulder dia = 9mm

Bolt thread dia = 6mm

Yeah this is what I got also.

Bolt thread pitch = 1.75mm

You could use 6mm or 8mm diameter bolts,

that are say 40mm long,

but the only problem you'll have is that the original bolts have that 9mm wide shoulder which fits nice & snug when going through the splitter & front bumper,

the splitter might be slightly loose if you don't obtain that shoulder around base / centre of bolts.

I suppose you might get away with it if you used, erm say 8mm bolts and sleeved neck washers, these washers would spread the pressure when tightened up, and the sleeve neck part of washer would fit into the 9mm / 10mm bolt holes in splitter & front bumper, similar to original bolts.

The other thing is to re-drill the holes, in the splitter retaining plate to 9mm same as the splitter & front bumper holes,

but be careful if you re-drill them to 10mm as the 10mm bolts may not fit through bumper holes, I don't know for sure.

And then weld the correct size nut on the back of the retaining plate.

I'd say 40mm should be more then enough for the replacement bolt length.

You could also double check the bolt hole size in the splitter & front bumper, using your vernier caliper as they can measure internally as well.

This way it'll 100% confirm if the bolt holes are 9mm or 10mm in diameter.

Hi Si

Funny you ask I refitted today.

Got the fitter in work to weld 10mm nuts on the rear of the clips like you suggested.

Worked a treat m8.

Far more solid a fit too as the 90 mm flexes more due to the drop

For spacers i just cut some copper pipe the same size and jobs a goodun.

Cheers for the help m8.

Buy u a pint if we ever meet.Dazz

Hello. I took the splitter of my car - well a grass verge helped a bit - a while ago and have forgotten how to put it back! I bought new set of apparently the right OEM screws and clips on the forum but the screws seem far too short and I cannot see where to put the clips.

If the brackets on the reinforcing bar go behind the bumper and the splitter clips into the bumper it would seems what I needed were longer set screws and some washers but the way the reinforcing bar brackets angle when behind the bumper does not look right?

Is the splitter held on by screws through the splitter, the bumper and the reinforcing bar into a bracket on the reinforcing bar? Seems such a daft thing to have to ask! Thanks for any help.

Hello there,

I think there are 5 bolts going through the splitter reinforcing plate, then there are at least another 1 or 2 smaller bolts securing the splitter at each end.

I think the splitter reinforcing plate slides over the two raised horizontal lips, from the front bumper and the splitter, once the splitter is placed under the bumper to attach it.

The reinforcing plate should only go on one way, with the 5 bolt holes lining up.

The bottom of the reinforcing plate is flat with the bolt holes, but the top of it has raised points that the 5 bolts screw into if you know what I mean.

Like I say the reinforcing plate should only go on one way.

Hope this helps

Si

I've been looking at a few items online,

and it looks like the original front splitter bolts, the main 5 bolts that secure it to the bumper are now obsolete.

Part number N90433801

I can possibly get a load remade if anyone's interested.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Many thanks

Si

Hello Si, thanks for the reply. Does the splitter fit into the groove along the bumper with the reinforcing bar under the back of the bumper below that groove? That is how I tried to fit it but then the five raised, threaded brackets on the reinforcing bar were pushed upwards by the shape of the bumper groove and were not square to the fixing bolts. Everything else lines up but this seems wrong? Cheers. David
