Erallus 10 Posted March 31, 2018 Hi all, I need to separate the gearbox from the car to remove a bolt which got in there (tried magnet tools, cameras, no luck very unlucky). Question is support beam or a crane? The crane seems like it would be more useful overall, but its a lot more expensive and is this overkill for a job like this. However, happy to offset the additional cost by having a nice crane for any future work (chain removal ect ect). Space isn't an issue as lucky enough to have a garage to work in. The two products I'm considering: Support Beam https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-cec500ds-dual-hook-enginegearbox-suppo/ Crane: https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cfc100-1-tonne-folding-workshop-crane/ Maybe I'll just get the beam, see how it goes as it's only 80 quid! I always hated using beams as if it moves it’s a bit of a wrestle to get it back in line and quite often in the way but should work on the almost flat wings of the Corrado crane is much better though Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Jim Bowen 1 Posted March 31, 2018 I have both, used the beam once and didn't really get on with it. Did the job though. The good thing with with the beam is i can shut the garage leaving beam in place. Can't do that with the crane though.
Kaiser7 10 Posted March 31, 2018 I've just replaced the chains on mine and used a beam because of the cost and space constraints. Got mine secondhand but you can get the same one for £40 here: https://www.manomano.co.uk/miscellaneous-lifting-accessories/engine-hoist-support-beam-500kg-1100lbs-810702?model_id=810702 Bought a M12 threaded bar and supported the gearbox through a 10mm hole on casing with a "d" shackle which is the approximate center of gravity. I removed the o/s driveshaft and the flange on gearbox so I could just wind it up and down with the nut on top of the beam. Hope this helps, good luck. I have width, but not much length (fnarr fnarr) I always hated using beams as if it moves it’s a bit of a wrestle to get it back in line and quite often in the way but should work on the almost flat wings of the Corrado crane is much better though Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk A lot seem to say they can slip off the wings.
