junbao 0 Posted August 2, 2004 Aaaargh, was just saying yesterday how the rado has been my most trouble free car so far!!!  Need help identifying a problem that started tonight. Get a big thunk/clunk noise when changing gear and drop the clutch BUT only in certain circumstances, have managed it mostly when getting second(but also with 1st and 3rd once or twice) with about 2/3000 revs and only on certain bits of road am thinking it must be when steering is in a certain place maybe!???!??? To make it clearer, on a 30 min journey round town, changing gears all over the place, i got it to do it about 10 times :?: This is really bugging me! It def isn't a grind, it really is a CLUNK, I can get it to do it but only when the cirecumstances are just right. There doesn't seem to be any noise when turning, ie CV joints, but i reckon it must be something in the transmission. :?: Was in a car park and mate was talkin to my dad on the phone, and when i was testin it, DAD heard it on the phone!! very worrying if its that loud! Also might be imagining it but there seems to be a force on steering when changing gear with revs (if it clunks or not) but i may have imagined it after being paranoid my wheels were about to fall off! :? I realise I have just written equivalent of a short novel but its difficult to describe, :?: :!: :x Really hope someone can help, cheers :) Jon
kvwloon 0 Posted August 2, 2004 Could it be front engine mount on the way out  Worth a look?
junbao 0 Posted August 2, 2004 Wow, quick reply dude! That would probably make sense, its a powerful engine, and its at low speeds where the torque would be trying to shift the engine most. Got an idea on how much that'll cost me on a VR6? am used to mk2 golf prices so am sitting down, nice and calm! J
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 2, 2004 Have a look at the lower half of the engine mount. There's a cup holding it to the subframe with 3 13mm nuts. Drop the cup down and look for tearing in the rubber. If it looks OK, it might have just gone squishy with age. Have a look at the gearbox mount too as they are a weak point. Hopefully the clunking isn't the engine hitting the bonnet. Prices, about £50-£60 from VW for the front, uprated ones about double that. If it's the gearbox one, fit a solid rubber one from a MK2 Golf diesel, about £15 from GSF. Storm 0 Posted August 2, 2004 £25-35 from GSF or Euro car parts. If it lets go you bonnet will probably need replacing, so chop chop
junbao 0 Posted August 2, 2004 Whoah, thanks for the warning guys, might have to check the bonnet tonight if I actually want to be able to sleep! Take it this is a fairly common problem/noise then (mind you the car is on 116k so thats not a bad run!). J
junbao 0 Posted August 3, 2004 All sorted now, was the gearbox engine mount. Had gone completely!! engine lifted right off the mounting point!! BIG BIG thanks to Advanced Auto Repair (VAG specialists) in Christchurch, managed to squeeze it in this afternoon, even with a full booking fior the next week!! kvwloon 0 Posted August 3, 2004 Glad you got it sorted. I would plan to replace the front one when you get a chance as well in the future, given the mileage and the fact the g'box one was completely shot. Saves putting a nice dent in your bonnet later down the line!
