scottgroovez 0 Posted August 4, 2004 Recently when I start up my Golf G60, I'm getting a bit of white smoke from the exhaust which I'm guessing is steam as the coolant level has dropped a little. I've recently replaced the head, so obviously a new genuine head gasket was fitted. How else would coolant get into the cylinders? Or could it be something else? Cheers Scott
G60Dan 0 Posted August 4, 2004 moisture in the exhaust? Does it go away once the cars warmed up? Have you topped the coolent up & it's done down a 2nd time?
scottgroovez 0 Posted August 4, 2004 There is water on the end of the tailpipes, but I thought that was coolant. Yeah, it goes away once it's warmed up. I'm gonna top the coolant and see if it drops again.
coolrado 0 Posted August 4, 2004 did you get the head skimmed??
G60Dan 0 Posted August 4, 2004 I couldn't see coolant making it all the way from the head to the tail pipe. 1st impression would suggest just moisture & nothing to worry about . Keep an eye on the coolant level & let us know how you get on.
dr_mat 0 Posted August 4, 2004 smoke is very distinct from steam - which is it? It's absolutely normal for a bit of steam on cold mornings, nothing at all to worry about - moisture condensing out of the exhaust gases.
scottgroovez 0 Posted August 4, 2004 did you get the head skimmed?? Yes, the head has been skimmed. smoke is very distinct from steam - which is it? It's absolutely normal for a bit of steam on cold mornings, nothing at all to worry about - moisture condensing out of the exhaust gases. Tis white smoke and it happens at any time, even a hot day. I'll top it up and keep an eye on the level. Cheers for all your quick and helpful replies :) Scott
dr_mat 0 Posted August 4, 2004 white smoke.. hmm.. I'd keep an eye on the oil level too. I know oil produces blue smoke, but sometimes it's hard to see the colour.
