White Smoke on Start-up

Recommended Posts

Recently when I start up my Golf G60, I'm getting a bit of white smoke from the exhaust which I'm guessing is steam as the coolant level has dropped a little.

I've recently replaced the head, so obviously a new genuine head gasket was fitted. How else would coolant get into the cylinders? Or could it be something else?

Cheers

Scott

moisture in the exhaust?

Does it go away once the cars warmed up?

Have you topped the coolent up & it's done down a 2nd time?

There is water on the end of the tailpipes, but I thought that was coolant.

Yeah, it goes away once it's warmed up.

I'm gonna top the coolant and see if it drops again.

I couldn't see coolant making it all the way from the head to the tail pipe. 1st impression would suggest just moisture & nothing to worry about . Keep an eye on the coolant level & let us know how you get on.

smoke is very distinct from steam - which is it?

It's absolutely normal for a bit of steam on cold mornings, nothing at all to worry about - moisture condensing out of the exhaust gases.

did you get the head skimmed??

Yes, the head has been skimmed.

Tis white smoke and it happens at any time, even a hot day.

I'll top it up and keep an eye on the level.

Cheers for all your quick and helpful replies :)

white smoke.. hmm.. I'd keep an eye on the oil level too. I know oil produces blue smoke, but sometimes it's hard to see the colour.
