Welcome me to Corrado Ownership

Recommended Posts

I have been hanging around here for a little while now, already have a project MK2 VR6 (in bits still), but after gettting peed off driving round in something underpowered I took the plunge on thursday afternoon and bought this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2488158124

Went and picked it up on saturday morning and after cursing myself all the way there for buying something like this on impulse everything hasnt turned out too bad.

Found out that it had an engine rebuild a couple of years back with a stack of receipts for it, and lots of other history beside. Got a spare door to try and sort the one out with a dent, a hardly used Bentley manual and everything electrical works as well. There are some slight niggles with it, but more of those in a minute. The seller was honest about it all, and it seems an honest car, still in the same town as registered in 1992, the warning triangle and first aid box are still there, and it seems to have worn its miles well.

One of the problems mentioned in the advert was the oil leak. It has recently had a rocker gasket change, but it still looked a little wet in that area. But a lot of the oil seemed to be coming from the oil pressure switches on the filter head. Having some VR6 spares was going to come in handy I think. The wishbone bushes were also giving some trouble appearing to be worn, and the subsequent drive home revealled some movement in the wheels. Later on I had a check with the wheel in the air and it was really bad, something seriously wrong, especially as it had powerflex bushes in there from a previous replacement job. Once I managed to get the wishbone out, it became imediately obvious that they were the wrong bushes, for a MK2 Golf in fact. Good job I had a spare set of wishbones with new powerflex bushes in already then. I also had VAG-COM connected to see if there were any fault codes coming up - nothing there. It was a good job that I checked the dizzy though, the electrical connecter inside had been glued in and some of the glue was floating inside causing the connected to come loose and a wire to start being rubbed. A good secondhand one of those, and it seemed better, but I still think that the plugs and leads should be changed to make sure all is well (the leads look a bit past it)

Also since then I have taken off the K&N cone and refitted the original airbox, and made sure that the throttle is getting all the travel from the cable (altered the position of the clip that holds it in place next to the TB)

I already have some mods and remedial work lined up - A shrick manifold is being considered, I already have one waiting to go onto my other VR6 engine, so it looks like I may have to find another.

288mm brakes are going to go on, I have the whole kit ready and waiting

Some new wheels (the MK3 16v ones already on there dont clear 288mm calipers)

Neuspeed ARB's will be going on (already have them)

Maybe some suspension, if Eibach Golf VR6 springs are interchangeable onto a Corrado (anyone?)

Apart from that, its going to be a drive it and love it affair I think

AFAIK the eibach spring kit is the same for both cars. My old ones are now on my mates mk3 16v and apart from the back sitting lower than the fronts, its fine.

ironically enough the VR6 that my suspension currently resides was originally a 16v too............not that it should make much of a difference as the GTi's and VR6 Mk3's all use the plus suspension

ChrisP - saw you turn up at E38 in your Corrado :) You parked at the end of the row of cars near the road in and then promptly went to move again. Thought the car looked nice - don't see many in that colour! :)

I drove it in and my friend had to drive right to the other end of the car park to have a wee - she has dodgy legs bless her

Started on the mods today - changed the VW roundell from a chrome to a Black one this morning :)

This afternoon saw an oil and filter change, and the underside steam cleaned of all its oily crap. Hopefully be able to see where the oil leak is coming from - my bet is on the oil cooler housing seals

I also found out today that the tool kit has the original plug removal tool, and the rear seat still has the original first aid kit and warning triangle - well chuffed

It has a couple of dents on the other side as well unfortunately, but they arent as noticeable

They are from a MK3 16v, the early version that had 280mm brakes. I know from experience that these dont fit over 288mm MK3 brakes which I am intending on fitting soon - I already have them, and the current discs are warped

I do have some 180 brake TT 16's, but I dont know how they are going to look yet. Will find out soon when the brakes and suspension get changed

What a car for ya money, I should think your well pleased with that.

Like the colour as well :)

I'll be even more pleased at the end of the week - new plugs and leads should have it running a bit better, and a new interior (it is a very early VR with the older style interior)
