Telephone Attenuator on head unit - how does it work?

I have a sony MDX 690 Head Unit in my C that says it has a Telephone Attenuator on board.

Any ideas what this means? Can I wire my mobile into the head unit like a car phone?

Anyone else done this? I would like to know what is involved and what I need to get.

hooks up from the phone to the HU so that when your phone rings the HU will mute the sound so you can hear the call.

Oh! I thought you could use the Head Unit to carry calls through the cars speaker with a mic etc? Am I totally wrong?

attenuate means to mute mate.

 

some phone kits have addons to use the HU as a speaker system but thats something else entirely.

I have the remains of a lead for a Sony head-unit that does just that - but you probably need an autoelectrician to make it work.
