NEW MEMBER TO THE CORRADO CREW!

Hello people,

 

As of yesterday I am now an owner of a CVR6! 8)

At the time I was giving some serious consideration to a late spec Nissan 200 Touring which is a very useful second hand buy, thanks to consideration! On face value, the Nissan has a lot going for it, 200bhp, rwd, full leather, air con,10 stack cd. But the truth is, the Corrado is a better place to be, looks much better and is an all round better performer. I have never owned a 6cylinder car but am definitley enjoying it!

It's silky smooth and has a great engine note to it. I bought the car off a woman who had owned it for 4 years, it has done 133k miles which is average for this car but high in general terms. The fact is that this car still feels miles better then when I bought a mint 205 1.9 with 69k.

I am planning some minor mods for now- powerflex bushes, cross drilled brakes and an induction kit.

Have any of you tried these? What are the best ones to go for? and is it definitley worth it?

Further down the line I am thinking about an engine conversion, has anyone done the R32? Would you have to compensate for the extra power and weight with a light weight bonnet, fronnt wings and an lsd?

Alternativley there is the 225 1.8 20VT which although is not a V6 is still very appealing.

I have read somewhere on the net there is a U.S MK2 Corrado plannedwith a flagship W8 model!

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Phew - where to begin.

 

Firstly welcome to the forum. Can understand that it was a tough choice as those 200SX's are very nice, very affordable, and very well specced but it looks like you came through to the right decision in the end :)

 

The induction kit is a great mod on the VR6 - doesn't really improve power (might feel a bit freer revving) but the change to the noise you simply won't believe. In fact it gets soo loud that you might find it a bit OTT but - just depends how you like your car, and how you drive it :)

 

All Corrado rumours unfortunately appear to be just that - the ones floating around on the net are just digitally manipulated pictures.. there are no confirmed tidbits of info on a Corrado replacement.

Superb choice :D The VR is a cracking engine, if nothing else it just sounds fantastic!

 

As jimsG60 says, there's not a lot to be gained from an induction kit as far as power goes (unless you go for a top of the range Turn 2 one) as the induction kits all suck in hot air from the engine bay. They do however give it a bit more growl :)

 

The standard VAG disks are actually pretty good when mated up with some Pagid FR pads too, it's also worth looking to see if your rear brake calipers have ceased. If they have, then fixing them will get you another 10% or so braking power.

 

On the bushes front, keep the standard VAG rear axle bushes as these are the only ones to keep the passive rear wheel steering you get on the Corrado. The rest I can't comment on, but it depends on how much you like your fillings ;)

Thanks for the info guys.

It looks as tho the rear discs are corroding so I will replace them shortly, I would of thought the front ones would go first?. I noticed that they don't have as much bite as I expected from a vag car having read reviews on the Cupra but they certainly are very progressive and I'm now getting a good feel for them :)

Do you know what the best oil and fuel additives are as I am rarely getting more than 30mpg and have read that many of you have 33+. I guess maybe I am just pushing the accelerator a bit too much :-P

Also I read that some of you are using only VW Oil filters, is this necessary or will a halfords one be ok? And what size and instrument do I need to take the sump plug off?

Do any of you know when the next Corrado cruise is that is closest to Junction4 on M25?

hi and welcome.

 

best to stick to VW synta silver...i tried to suggest other stuff but everyone told me synta was the best. its fully synthetic and 10w40 weight. use a mann oil fiter. £8 ish from GSF car parts.

 

there is a meet up for a rolling road day in colchester area soon, is that near you?

If the rear disks are corroding, it sounds like your rear calipers have seized... unfortunately this is one of the Corrados (and MKII golf for that matter) weak points... If they have seized up, then the best thing to do is to get hold of some MKIV golf rear calipers and adaptor pipes, standard rear disks and pads and new rear bearings and just do the lot in one hit... that way you'll have better than standard brakes which won't seize up... 8) Once you've done these then you'll find that the brakes have much more bite... 8)

 

Oil should be Synta Silver which is actually a VAG supplied oil but is actually very reasonably priced! :D Most people here agree that Optimax seems to make a difference to the performance and economy of the Corrado and don't tend to bother with any other additives... You'll probably notice that your fuel economy will keep getting worse for a little while as you get used to the car as you start to push it a little more each time up until a point where the newness factor wears off a little (it never goes completely! ;) ) and you'll start getting more respectable MPG figures! :lol: 8)

 

I only use either genuine VW or MANN filters on my car purely 'cos they're OEM and I know they won't kill my engine... 8)

 

Sump plug on most VWs is a 19mm spanner, but I don't have a VR6, so I can't swear to that....

 

Oh, and I'm a northern monkey, so I have no idea where J4 M25 is... have a search on here for "no rice" and "Ace Cafe" as these are both pretty big down your way.... 8)

samm_cvr6, also...try doing an ecu reset once the engine is warm (disconnect the battery for 20mins) and then take it for a run (again while engine is still warm) ...i was told that should help MPG ??

 

if you use a fuel addetive or optimax for that matter you may see a reduced MPG to start but this is due to blocked injectors being partly cleaned and allowing more fuel through...again an ecu reset should help this.

jedi-knight83, If I can get a piston and get the engine re-bedded in, yes... 8) Oh, and now I've sold the RS4 front bumper, I won't have to mess about taking it off to get onto the rollers anymore! :D 8)
