G60 Bob 0 Posted September 25, 2004 My friend and i are changed the timing belt on my G60 and we are having a few problems setting the timing back up. The appears to be no mark on thye crank pulley so we dont know how to line it up also is it the 1 dot mark or the 2 dot mark on the cam pulley/ Your help would be much appreciated before we do some damage! Thanks Robert
Supercharged 2 Posted September 25, 2004 IIRC the 2 dot mark needs to be at 3 O'Clock with C1 set at TDC Very similar recent thread here... http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic. ... g60+timing Use the search if you need more info
Henny 0 Posted September 25, 2004 that thread has the official VW "how to" document instructions on it... if you can't get it right following that, you really need to either replace something, or get it to a garage to get them to set it up for you... :|
Supercharged 2 Posted September 26, 2004 Also worth mentioning that if you can't see the crank pulley mark then try to use the flywheel one instead... (may be more accurate anyways If the crank pulley has been off in the past because as its held in place by a woodruff key and the crankbolt becomes loose, the key will snap and if its then just done back up again it may not be alligned correctly)
Banana Man 0 Posted September 26, 2004 Also worth mentioning that if you can't see the crank pulley mark then try to use the flywheel one instead... There are 2 pulleys the one that directly attaches to the crank ( with woodruff key between crank and pulley) and the other crank pulley ( that sits on the main crank pulley and runs the poly V belt that attaches to the main crank pulley via a small dowel pin) So theres no fear of it being out enough to cause problems. If there is wear and tear on the main crank pulley then change it and also change the bolt for a golf bolt with an engine code of DX as it's alot stronger than trhe PG stretch bolt!! Both are cheap enough from the stealers anyway. It could be an expensive mistake if you dont change them aint that right Henny LOL we've been there done that and got the T-shirt and the cuts and bruises, oh and the empty wallets too LOL
Henny 0 Posted September 27, 2004 yeah... not much fun when that bolt gives up... :( The flywheel mark is vastly more accurate than the pulley mark anyway, I always use that one when timing up my engine... but then, I've not got any choice now as my toothed belt pulleys don't have a timing mark on 'em!
Banana Man 0 Posted September 27, 2004 but then, I've not got any choice now as my toothed belt pulleys don't have a timing mark on 'em! Same as!!! I ve always used the timing mark on the flywheel as well but the pulley marks on the std pulley's are still fine for timing shouldn't ever be out enough to actually be a tooth out!!! G60 Bob 0 Posted September 27, 2004 Just an update for you guys. I found the thread that you are talking about and that showed us the way however the monkey that had replaced it previously had botched all sorts of things so basically my mechanic friend had to set it up from scratch (something he hadny done since tech!) So anyhow we eventaully got her up and running and sounding sweet apart from a squeaking noise. After investigating th esqueaking noise for a few minutes the tensioner went bang.............got the engine stopped straight away so hopefully no damage is done. Got a new tensioner today from GSF so will get it running again this evening`. Keep your fingers crossed for me guys
Henny 0 Posted September 27, 2004 as long as the cambelt didn't snap, come off or go slack, you'll be fine... 8) I ALWAYS replace the tensioner when I do a cam belt.... it's not worth the hassles it causes when they fail for the sake of £15! :|
G60 Bob 0 Posted September 29, 2004 UPDATE Well its looks like we have gone and bent a valve so the head is currently off getting skimmed and fully rebuilt to turn the negative into a postive (although the bank balance will feel th enegative alright!!) The thing is the guy im using wont port and polish the thing because he cant guarantee it so i was wondering if i should have a go myself? Will it make much difference?
