  1. The best tape for listening to in a VR6: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainmen ... 133426.stm Personally I preferred the John Cage version. But there you go.
  2. Oxymoron? "IRONY and SARCASM" ... ;)
  3. Hmmm. 6x9s vs three way component setups. Tricky one. I'll let you know my opinion when I've found the fascia for my stereo (I know the car came with one), oh and a decent tape to put in it. ;)
  4. Around the £600-700 mark all in. Most places assume 10 hours labour, and then you pay around £300 for the parts. Mk4 tensioner will save you £20 tho..
  5. They do stretch. Most machinery doesn't have to do sudden stop/start cycles - the timing chains do. By how much I couldn't tell you, but it's a contributory factor.
  6. Sounds like you're beginning to get the hang of this Corrado ownership thing. Of course us seasoned regulars in the Corrado repair game would say "hmm why not get a different final drive and a limited slip diff fitted while I'm in there"?
  7. Sadly the answer to that question costs you $64,000. I have heard of a guy who replaced the pad alone (not the actual tensioner, just the pad that's rivetted to it) without removing the lower housing (and therefore without removing the gearbox). But since part of the problem is that the chain itself has stretched, and you can't replace the chain without dropping the gearbox it seems a little pointless to not do it properly.
  8. Congrats. Your prize is to buy me a steering rack. ;)
  9. There can be only one ....... You'll have to lop my head off if you want it to stop! :) (There's a prize if you can name that naff film reference.)
  10. Yep, all true. Perhaps people have slightly lower expectations from Skoda though? Certainly you pay less money you expect less. VW would probably not be rated so low if a) they didn't charge so much and b) their dealers gave a monkeys.
  11. Dunno, but you're right - they rusted to buggery, the lot of 'em! THAT is the key for VW's reputation for reliability - rustproofing. Now that everyone else has sussed rustproofing, VW's advantage is.. well.. diminished. But that doesn't stop them playing off it in the ads... "If only everything in life had so many expensive replacement components as a VW" ;)
  12. Probably best taken off the public forums.. people just aren't interested... (I know I struggle to raise an eyebrow these days...) :) PM me!
  13. I skipped the graduate scheme thing. Some bunch of fools hired me as a "professional".. They learned!! :)
  14. Kev on the other hand will bore you rigid about other, less esoteric things.. ;)
  15. That's true they were always pretty exciting in a "not quite sure if we're going to get round the next one" sense. The Corrado just has so much grip you have to get SO silly before you start to even think twice. Some of the most fun driving I've done has been in the snow/ice. 10mph and almost no grip, and the entertainment factor is huge! You can chuck it around, do stupid things with the brakes, the throttle, rally style steering, all perfectly safe yet not in control.. Great laff.. :)
  16. No worries, I'm sure the car deserved everything it got! :)
  17. A unique combination! Spanners and sums! Bravo that man! :) Now perhaps if you learned that cars were best with their wheels facing downwards ... ;)
  18. Ironic ain't it? Vauxhall have this image - the middle of the road, middle-aged, safe, boring market, plus the odd "sporty" model for the repmobile market. Yet somehow, despite their management's best efforts, the engineers made some damn sorted engines. Unfortunately management got the better of the chassis designers and keyed in so much understeer and so little front end grip that even yer granny could handle that 200bhp 2.0 turbo.. :(
  19. Now you probably think I'm a bit of a Vauxhall fiend, but I also always thought they did make some good engines: I've never experienced peakiness like I have in this VR6 (as standard) before, and when you consider I'm talking about a 2.9 vs even a 1.6 that's a big thing!
  20. dr_mat

    Name that hose!

You did well there.. unless the prices have dropped since I ordered mine! Was a £43 bill, inc vat!
  21. Ok, I didn't know to that level of detail, but I presumed it would be at least a development from the same bits....... :)
  22. Sorry to say, I have a pair of degrees. One BSc and a PhD. So yes! :D Unfortunately I have no clue with a spanner.. The maths just ain't transferable to the workshop... :)
  23. damn...thats ANOTHER thing on mine that not working as it should then!!! i always assumed that it wasnt one touch up?? I think we came to the conclusion this feature was removed for late cars. "Safety" or something....
  24. I suspect a 2.7 V6 turbo with only 230 bhp won't be pushing a lot of boost. Probably has very wide torque and minimal lag on that, given that the 2.7 V6 30V can probably develop not far off 200bhp on it's own... It's the anvils I tell you. ;)
