dingo started following a quick brake question, bad noises.... gearbox?, Welsh newbie and and 7 others
-
what price are you looking at for it?
-
do you have the gearbox for the early valver? was it in good condition/what's the milage?
-
hey ben, welcome to the forum - hope to see you round, i'm living just outside cowbridge! (half of the year anyway...)
-
oh boll*cks. had the rado up on the stands to investigate some ominous sounds - was getting some bad grinding noises when pulling off in first gear.. initially thought it might be an arch liner rubbing but i think i was being optimistic! ran her in first gear up on the stands toady, no problem. as soon as i apply some load (by applying the brake) the grinding starts to happen. it's definitely metallic and sounds/feels like a cog is slipping over another cog somewhere. it's only happening in first gear when under load. not second or reverse etc. can anyone offer a differential diagnosis? knackered gearbox.. ? never jumps out of gear. does have a 5th gear whine. it's done 170K, so maybe it's just feeling tired and wants a break! what do you guys think? thanks :thumbleft:

hi Jon :) thanks for the note, made me smile! the paint is metallic quartz ;) apologies for the dirty car, it was clean a few days before but my neighbour managed to cover it in brick dust...
-
are the clocks in good working order? a picture would be appreciated, thanks
-
really hope it's not my immobiliser! engine is running fine. thought about it for a bit and now suspicious of the flasher relay.. maybe it's on its way out. does the flickering with the hazard light switch too
-
developed a curious problem with my indicators today, here's the problem: Indicators are normal when ignition is ON and the engine is OFF, but a few second after the engine is switched on the indicator starts to flicker. This happens on both sides. I've checked to see if there any blown bulbs and there isn't. There doesn't seem to be any flickering in any other lights, be it headlight/dash or interior light.. if it makes any difference I'm pretty sure the car has LED indicators all round and I only noticed the problem after replacing HT leads . all opinions/advice appreciated - thanks guys Dave

don't spose you've got a leather handbrake grip? get the feeling i'll be searching for years... -
I got some of the heated convex mirrors from eBay, using the original backing plates. they're not tinted, but for the price they're very good. probably the most cost effective mod I've done. eBay item number: 330775629888

thanks bmwcompact, I'll go down the local dealers with those part numbers and see how much the backplates are. I seem to remember reading, somewhere in the depths of clubgti, someone saying they didn't need to be changed.. but can't find it anymore. oh well

cheers for the reply daley they didn't look bad when it was on the ramps last time so looking to keep them if I can. anyone know if there any difference between the backplates of 16v/VR/G60?
