Is there any kind of free online HPI checking thing ....or anywhere i can put in a reg number and it tells me car details??

the RAC site has one, but you now need to register to use it... it's free though, but won't give you all that many details...

In my opinion, HPI is still the best...

HPI warranty their check. So if something comes out the woodwork and they hadn't warned you about it, they will cover your loss for up to £10k.

Worth the extra fiver or tenner over the other services, IMHO!
