ClassicStorm 0 Posted June 3, 2003 All, I am having some problems with noise from my VR.It is making a whistling style noise when accelerating but it disappears when I put her into Neutral. It is nothing to do with the powered steering or brakes, any ideas? It had a oil coolant change a few thousand miles ago and a fully synthetic oil change then too.It is bugging me and I'm worried that it is something important/expensive!I am stumped.......it occurs at low revs but is quieter? stormseeker 0 Posted June 3, 2003 When accelerating? You mean when booting it (i.e. WOT - wide open throttle) over 3800rpm?? If so it's normal and it's the infamous VR6 whistle! If not, then it's not. Water pump? Alternator? How do you know it's not the power steering pump?
ClassicStorm 0 Posted June 3, 2003 It is not with WOT,at low revs just easing in the throttle. It makes the noise when the steering wheel is not moving and when still on my path so I presumed that it couldn't be anything to do with the powered steering. It could be the Alternator but I had a voltmeter across it and it seems to be ok,interference with the amp is a possibility though. The powered steering pressure pipe and fluid was replaced about 3 months ago?!I would hope that the pump was ok coz no mention was made that the pump was on the way at the time?!How do I know if its water pump orientated? stormseeker 0 Posted June 3, 2003 If it's a whistle (like a hiss?) could be a vacuum leak. Is it coming from under the bonnet or inside the car (behind the dash?) Auxilliaries like water pump/power steering/alternator etc. tend to make rumbling/grinding type noises if they're on thier way out. (Bearings get noisy)
ClassicStorm 0 Posted June 3, 2003 It is like a hiss, vacuum leak going to cost me much? Thanks for all your info, much appreciated.........
stormseeker 0 Posted June 3, 2003 It is like a hiss, vacuum leak going to cost me much? Thanks for all your info, much appreciated......... If it's inside the car then it'll be to the back of the instrument cluster (MFA uses vacuum to work out the MPG reading) - not difficult to fix but a PITA to dismantle the dash. Might cost a bit in labour charges if you're not doing it yourself. If it's under the bonnet then it just might be a hose clip that needs tightening/replacing or at worst a hose needs replacing. Is your airbox securely clipped down? If you've had work done on the car then someone just may have forgotten to tighten something up properly if they've had to remove some of the intake plumbing. Not entirely sure about the ISV on the VR, and if that could be leaking, maybe someone else could help... :?: :?: :?: Have you got a friendly mechanic you can take the car to to have a listen to???
