hotdog 0 Posted January 4, 2005 My vr6 engine appears to use quite alot of oil. There appears to be no blue smoke during normal driving If I floor it there appears to be black smoke in the higher gears Engine has done about 77k no rattles  Have had a couple of leaks sorted recently rocker cover and sump gasget It has just passed a mot no probs So anybody help? or have any suggestions Many thanks if you have any idears Steve
corradovr6sc 0 Posted January 4, 2005 what kind of oil do you use? Vr6s tend to burn thin oils like 0w/5w 40 which would also explain the oil usage and leaks from the gaskets.
Supercharged 2 Posted January 4, 2005 hotdog, Welcome to the forum.... What grade/type oil are you using and what temperatures are you getting on the MFA?
hotdog 0 Posted January 5, 2005 Hi thanks for the replies I have had car serviced recently and think they have used a fully synthetic oil Will have to check and get back to you Steve
rmn 0 Posted January 5, 2005 I have a vr6, i use semi synth, fully synth is too fine for my car and just goes out the exhaust i would say the same problem is with your car, just the oil is too fine

When you say a lot, what do you mean? The C when New would typically burn circa 1ltr/1kmiles. no worries My C now burns around the same with 52k on her maybe a little less for some reason or another. I Would be more concerned about the blue smoke. sign of a very tired engine, but as u say only in higher RPM would be of no great concern. Maybe your mind playing tricks. If the engine was cold or with continuous blue smoke would be a sure sign of the bug bang. Hope this is of interest. but define high oil usage.

Erm, I'd say that was very high usage, they only quote 1 ltr in the handbook to cover themselves... Half to 1 litre every 3k's i'd say is normal... Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 6, 2005 My 108K VR uses about a litre over about 4000 miles. I had the head rebuilt and bores checked last year but mine's never particularly had a thirst for oil anyway. Some just seem to drink the stuff and others are more frugal with it. I use Quantum silver semi-synth oil although considering trying some slightly thicker 15/40W stuff next as the engine is getting old!
slot 0 Posted January 6, 2005 Anybody got any recommendations? This is in my opinion , of course ! But i would use "synta silver" semi sinth , this is used by most dealer's and the like The best place to get this, would be Gsf or europart's ! :)
matt_corradovr6 0 Posted January 6, 2005 ahh right i have fully synth castrol gtx in mine and the oil temps get quite high sometimes as high as 120!! would that explain it the thin oil. whats the reccomended semi syn th. what weight. mine has just done 100k and with no mods but they r planned. it doesn't use an excessive amount of oil as it is tho! Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 6, 2005 Castrol GTX is mineral isn't it? I though their Magnatec is semi-synth and the 'R' is fully synth? Could be wrong tho ! A good weight for the VR is 10/40W or 15/40W... or if it's getting a little long in the tooth, 15/50W.
matt_corradovr6 0 Posted January 6, 2005 i got fully synth 10 40 magnatec
