Loss In Performance

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, newbie here!! Having a few problems with my 1.8 16v Corrado. Recently its not been performing as usual, i had the accelerator cable changed and after that i saw the performance that comes out when you floor the gas in 1st gear. Now when i do the same the revs go up to the red line but the speed doesn't match the revs (makes a loud rev sound and is doing around 20 - 25 mph). I think its something to do with the clutch as the biting point has now changed and when i lift the clutch slowly the car leaps instead of slowly moving away. Also when i reverse the gear crunches. A weird thing i noticed since ages ago was that the revs always sit above the 1000 mark and then when i tap the pedal they go back down to the 1000 mark. The brakes feel rubbish compared to before, think i need to replace the fluid, Could this be the reason for the poor performance as the clutch fluid and brake fluid are from the same reservoir?? I don't know what could be wrong with the car at the moment  The engine sounds different from before too, more like a diesel than a 16valver!! and when i turn the steering wheel i hear a whining noise. Please could anyone help me as I don't know what is up with the car. Many Thanks in advance!!!

:D :D

If the engine speed isn't affecting the road speed then its safe to say you have clutch problems.....and a few others by the sound of it mate!

Thanks for the quick reply. Guess i gonna have to get the clutch replaced. Might as well tomorrow!!! By the way what is the small yellow reservoir which is towards the front of the engine bay. This is below the MIN line and seems to be leaking. I was thinking PAS fluid but there is nothing to say that in the manual. Could this be the reason why my steering is slightly heavy and squeeling sometimes??? Thanks!!!! :D :D

Sounds most likely that you have a clutch slave cylinder problem. You may or may not need a new clutch, it could just be the slave cylinder failing to close the clutch properly...

Thanks for the clutch advice!!!

Hi yeah the small yellow reservoir is just behind the radiator fan and more towards the passenger side. I couldn't find anything in the manual for this as my manual only shows a G60 engine which is different to mine.

Jus found what the yellow reservoir is. Its the Power Steering fluid. Where can i get this replaced from? Will a VW dealership rip me off if i ask them to change it for me? I have only had repairs done on the car once so i don't really know of any garages. Also how much would a complete clutch kit cost?? Thanks

Hi there,

Complete clutch kits can be had for 16V for about £80-100,

Try GSF carparts or GPC VW / Audi or Eurocarparts, etc. or sure that Unipart etc. can supply,

AFAIK Mike Edwards from this forum is also selling a complete Unipart clutch kit for 16v / g60 for £50, not sure if still available tho,

Yep, I doubt its the clutch itself but if the car is on high mileage then it may benifit from being changed but may still have the same problems if it is hydraulic, which it most likely is if the bite point has dropped (towards the floor)

The PAS res is £15 from the dealer but check its that thats leaking and not the pipe to it...

I'd get the brake fluid changed and a new slave cylinder first off...

Hey the car has done very low mileage but the previous owner did not look after it properly hence the problems. I will get the PAS fluid tomorrow and top it up. Yeah the leak is from the pipe connecting to the reservoir i think, will have a look tomorrow morning. Will have to get a garage to look at the car to see whats wrong with it. Thanks!!
