biggrim 0 Posted March 3, 2005 Sorry if this has been covered before, I tried the search but got 42 pages of results and I'm at work so can't browse them all to find it if it has. Whilst I have the alternator, charger and bracket off for changing my water pump I was going to change the timing belt and tensioner as the car will be partially in bits. I've got a couple of questions before I jump in and break my car at the weekend. How do I change said items? Do I need any specialist tools? Majik 0 Posted March 3, 2005 The crank pully bolt doesnt have to be taken off to do the cambelt, only you want to replace the bolt then. Also block the ports of the s/c off with masking tape or similar to stop debris getting inside. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Henny 0 Posted March 3, 2005 Majik, Good point! 8) Disposable rubber gloves work much better though, and you don't have problems with them not sticking to any crud on the charger casing like you would with masking tape... ;) (a trick learnt from G-man when he sent me my charger back... 8) ) Supercharged, A good torque wrench should be an essential normal tool for anyone doing any engine work like this... it's not a specialist tool... biggrim 0 Posted March 3, 2005 Ok, what's the part number for the crank bolt? I don't want what happened to Henny and Supercharged to happen to me! So I'll have the charger and alternator off and the water pump will be replaced. How do I change the crank bolt and the timing belt and tensioner? Will be getting done on saturday so be prepared for emergency posts regarding the work. Might take some pics and do a how to of it. (I'm sure I said that about doing my alternator tho). Henny 0 Posted March 4, 2005 potatonet, if the crank bolt is loose/shears off, your CAMBELT is affected and either messes the timing up or the cambelt comes off and messes up your engine... :| It's worth checking and replacing the bolt no matter if you're worried about it being a problem or not.... it's a £5 part (inc washer!) which could save you from having to have an engine rebuild... that's a no-brainer to me... ;) (just wish I'd have known about it before mine sheared off... :roll: ) Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Just order a crank bolt from the dealer, looks the same as the original but has been superceded by a non stretch type... Part number is on here is you search.
