Middle front armrest... how to build one yourself !

Hey Guys.. i can't hold you all from the fact that i like to do things for my corrado myself.. now i got the idea to build a middle armrest in front to drive as relaxing as possible :)

 

 

inside the armrest i think of making a little box where a set of sunglasses can be put in, or the remote of the ice system ... or..........

 

 

so i thought the model looked quite nice... so i have made work drawings for the armrest..

 

the material to use is 9 mm mdf... and a piece of metal for the lower part that clamps over the tunnel.

this is only an example of a work drawing, every dimension is given so allmost anyone could build this armrest... the dimensions are in mm's

 

(1 inch equals 25.4 mm)

i've been struggling with this idea for a while, i allready tried an armrest from a jetta and a escort, but just as i tought.. no possibility to get this nicely fitted in the corrado.. i'd have to drill holes in the tunnel, and drilling holes is the last thing i want to do in my corrado :wink:

 

but i have to honest, it isn't totally my own idea, i got the inspiration to build it myself from 2 fellow corrado drivers in the netherlands, who both have built one.. totally differentl.. and mine should be the best of both gathered together, and with an compartment to put some stuff in :)

Cool idea - but needs to be level with the top of the gear stick *:)

i built something similar for my old cavalier.. much much bigger though. it held about 40 cds and had a hidden compartment under the cds where i kept my 'valued goods' ;)

 

doesn't get in the way when plowing through the gears into 2nd and 4th? ..my cavo was automatic so i didn't have to worry about it.

 

my friend took the top off his armrest (in his jap-crap-mobile) cuz he always smashed his elbow when shifting hard. he butchers that car tho :lol:

you can make this as high as you want off course, i have measured the height with... hold on..... a bunch of cd boxes... just to get the good height... a lot of tape on top of it so it would stick to the tunnel.... 9-10 cm is good for me, even when shifting...

What about a simple armrest that can be bolted somehow to the side of the seat where the seat retracting lever is. It can have a pivot on it and some nice padding.

 

Think of an aeroplane seat with the reclining arm rests. This way if it gets in the way it can be pushed up It could also have a cup holder on the end aswell. What about monting a ice remote on it or mobile phone.

 

I think the old 5 series BMW had one of these reclining arm rests.

What about the new 7 series arm rest something like that could look good.

i have an armrest here of an escort... which... ALLMOST fits... i don't want to damage the car building an armrest, so i have chosen for this model, no bolts needed

well i got the metal part that i needed to fit the armrest over the tunnel....

 

now i can continue putting the foam and cloth over the armrest ;)

Anyone ever tried a golf 4 armrest, wonder if it would fit? I find the one on my golf pretty good, can move it up out of the way completely or dip it down so you have easier access to the gear lever and hand-brake.

I might try offering up my golf one tonight see if it would be practical to do.
